Fur pulling is most commonly due to itchy skin caused by parasites such as fleas or microscopic mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Make sure your cat is on a good monthly flea preventative such as Advantage or Revolution. In older cats, fur pulling can also be a symptom of an underlying internal disorder, such as hyperthyroidism, spinal arthritis/pain, kidney pain, etc. so if he has not had his yearly geriatric bloodwork recently then now would be a good time. Lastly, stress or intercat aggression can cause fur pulling due to "psychogenic alopecia", but this is a disease made by ruling out all other medical causes for the problem. I recommend starting with a recheck exam by your veterinarian for a good physical exam and then proceeding from there.
Good luck,

Hmm... We have indeed noticed that his movement has been pained of late. We started him on Hartz Joint Maintenance and he's showing less difficulty in movement. We're not sure if the fur pulling started before or after the pills though (he takes them like they're treats instead of pills). So it sounds like it's either arthritis related (we know he had injuries as a kitten that would predispose a body for it), or his system not agreeing with the pills.
Given how many different things it could be though, I'll take your advice and schedule an appointment with his vet. Thank you so much. Mom was fretting that it was a life threatening issue, and it sounds like there are several possible issues that are likely very treatable.
