There are many causes for weight loss in an older cat including kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, intestinal and liver problems, cancer.  Sometimes hair loss will occur because the cat is not healthy overall due to one of these diseases or there may be a unrelated skin problem occurring.  If your cat goes outdoors there can be fleas or fungal infections.  Your cat may be licking too much due to pain in the bladder or joints.

You need to take your cat to your veterinarian to have a complete exam and some blood and urine tests done.  Your vet can discuss all these issues with you and try to determine what is the cause of your cat's problems.  Xrays may be needed if your vet suspects arthritis pain.

If you have any questions about what your vet finds, feel free to write here again and keep us updated.
