Cholesterol and PCOS?

by RockyVT08, Oct 30, 2008 04:22PM
I have not been diagnosed yet, but I am fairly certain I will be. My doc was out of the office today so I had to reschedule my appointment, but the nurse did tell me my blood work came back and she did know I had high cholesterol and high testosterone. There was other stuff on there but she didn't know what it meant. I know the high masculine hormones are a sign, but I wasn't sure about the cholesterol. Is that a symptom or a cause. And with those two things and the fact I have about 4 periods a year, and that I have most of the physical signs like overweight and extra facial hair, is it safe to assume I have PCOS. I have to wait another week before my doc is available again and I dont want to wait if I could be doing something about it. They didnt have my o/s back yet but he did have me get one. Any advice?

Hey there... far as i know theres no actual links between PCOS and increased cholesterol.  Your high cholesterol is probably related to your lifestyle more so than anything else.  I definitely have PCOS, am quite overweight, but yet my cholesterol is quite low.
You probably have had a definitive answer by now from your doctor regarding whether or not you have PCOS, but if not, try searching the differential diagnosis for PCOS online and check if anything else has symptoms which match yours.

I do have PCOS. He said that cholesterol isnt always high, but it has been associated with it and he thinks that mine is because of the PCOS. My total is fine but the bad is high and good is low. My free testosterone is too high as well. I don't have the cysts though, which really surprised me.

My cysts didn't show up on a scan either.  Apparently they don't if they're less than 2cm in diameter.
