HSG test today and very nervous

I have the HSG test today and I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with me so that maybe I will have a better idea of what to expect. I have read many things on line and so far all I have heard is that it is extremely painful...is there anything I can do prior that might help, tylenol or advil..or something else.  What about this procedure really hurts...can someone explain exactly what happens???  I always feel better about things like this when I am more knowledgable about what they are doing to me.

This is kinda late but maybe it will help someone. Had the hsg test done Twice (Yikes)!! It was a nightmare it was over quick but when the dye went through the nurse thought I passed out (I did too!). If I didn't wamt a baby so badly It would be a cold day in you-know-where before I ever went through that ever again. And my tubes were open! I heard it was only supposed to hurt if you're tubes were blocked.  They told me to take advil 30mins. before and I didn't because I thought I could stand a few mins of pain (boy was I wrong) Oh well, as you can see I'm still scarred! It doesn't feel that way for everyone though and I did get pregnant the very next month even though I miscarried so for me it hurt me bad but for my baby I'd do it all over again

Please dont let me scare you.. I am a wimp and always have been. It hurt me but I dont tolerate pain well...so maybe you wont even feel it..you never know. My doctor told me that people either say..oh that was no bad...or the complete opposite that it hurt really bad. But good luck to you!!!! It goes by really fast and before you know it your done.

Wow, thanks for the update!  Now, I'm really not looking forward to it.

As for the ovary thing, I have no clue.  Maybe someone will comment and be able to answer your question.

Okay so I had the HSG test..It was very uncomfortable, cant really explain the pain.. I would have to say take the worst period cramp and times that by a few...but its fairly quick and then it is over. I still am crapping a little today...but not too bad. the dye never came out..that is why they put you on a antibiotic so that it wont cause infection (I guess with some people it doesnt come out)  Anyway they told me my right ovary was picture perfect, that I could not ask for a more perfect one...but my left was clogged or kinked or just was not working right...they could not get the dye to go into the left ovary at all.  I have another question now though.... on the 19th of this month I go in for a injection that will trigger ovulation in 36 hours..since I only have one good ovary will that be the one that the egg comes from or could it be my left ovaries turn to produce the egg and it just wont work this time??? How does that work if you ovaries take turnes each month and they give you the trigger shot?? does it cause both to drop the eggs??? I am also taking clomid..does that make a difference??

Hi, My name is Kristy.  I can't personally explain the procedure, as I am awaiting AF to schedule mine.  I was talking to someone and they said it's really not that painful, just uncomfortable.  That there might be some pressure when the balloon is expanded.  From what I've heard you "assume the position" as in a pap, and they insert a catheter with a balloon.  They will expand the balloon so it doesn't come out and then they inject the dye.  That might cause some discomfort too when the dye is injected.  I read that if they inject it slowly, it shouldn't hurt that much.  And you get to see instant results.  You do need to take tylenol, ibuprofen or aleve before the procedure (30 minutes).  My doctor's office also prescribed an antibiotic to take before hand and to continue afterwards.  Also, bring a pad or panty liner, as the dye will leak out and you don't want to ruin your underwear.  Good luck and please let me know how it goes.
