The test is called a glucose fasting test, and yes, you can ABSOLUTELY have insulin resistance and NOT have diabetes or PCOS. My friend lives near Philadelphia and has some of the best doctors in the country (I wish I had her doctors!) and that is her situation so I believe them. Now if it were the doctors I've been dealing with around here, I wouldn't necessarily buy it! ;o)
As far as the metformin - are you overweight? I think partly the metformin can help with the weight loss, and with insulin resistance it can be controlled by changing your diet, as well as losing weight. I'm no doctor, but I do think it's possible to ultimately go off the metformin once you achieve a healthy weight and learn how to eat properly to help the prevent the problem.
Now that I think of it, my friend is not on metformin. She just sees a nutritionist and is on a strict diet, and exercises A LOT. She was by no means overweight when she was diagnosed, but she said she has also lost weight.
Cheyenne_08, you and me are alike. I too am not insulin resistant but i do take 1000mg a day of metformin. My doctor said my sugar levels were ok, but could be better.
I had no insulin resistence but was put on metformin. I think it depends on your individual levels. I take 1000mg once a day.
Also I have pcos and am on 850 mg twice a day, also my blood sugar was a little high on the fasting test.
My doctor just did a fasting blood test. and my insulin level was high showing i had insulin resistance.
Hmmm... I remember doing that when I was pregnant...but my Dr. definitely did NOT do that test when testing for PCOS.
Your doctor would have to send you for a sugar test. The test where they take blood first, then you drink the orange drink wait 2 hours and repeat the blood test. I had that done, and my sugar levels were fine, but my doctor still put me on metformin 500mg 2X day.
