HI -
I've been on metformin for about 5 years - maybe a little longer. It did help regulate my periods for me. I am overweight with hair-an syndrome (which is similar to pcos) and with the metformin was able to regulate my cycles which allowed me to conceive two beautiful girls. It may take more for some people. I have a friend who has been on it for about the same amout of time and it helped regulate but she still has not been able to conceive.

Good luck!

Hi hun, as you know I started after ovarian drilling the metformin alone didn't do it for me.  and to clear things up it may not be a direct action of metformin but as kelsey829 said metformin can bring on a period by hormone regulation, and recent studies show that in women with PCOS metformin is MORE effective at inducing ovulation (by hormone regulation) than clomid!   ok sorry that rant is done.  All that being said I know we had close to the same hormone levels (pre-preggo), so I hope metformin works for you but I was on it for 6 months before I had the drilling done and prometrium was the only way AF came.  I really hope the specialist you went to can get you on a good plan.  xoxo, Amy

Hey there! I know you posted this almost a month ago but I wondered if you did start Metformin and if it's helped you.

We seem to kinda be in the same boat-- I don't have a period on my own (only with birth control or if it's induced with provera). I started taking metformin 10/24/10 1000mg a day... it makes my stomach upset after I eat, but it's gradually getting better, it gets worse if I don't be careful of what I'm eating.

Metformin is used for women who have PCOS, it helps regulate the carbohydrate intake and regulates the glucose in them. It doesn't bring a period. When you take it, it helps your body function normally, and the end result could possibly be a period. It doesn't matter if you're overweight at all, it's your body that doesn't regulate things. Talk to your doc, and see what would work best for you!

I too suffer from PCOS...I am currently taking 1500mg of metformin per day and still do not have regular cycles...In fact, before ttc I didn't even have a cycle...the 1st doctor put me on provera for 10 days, but the dr that I use now, does progesterone injections...he says they are safer just in case you are preggo...people with PCOS sometimes have to take fertility drugs to stimulate O if you don't do so on your own and those too can fail...hope everything goes well for you...

Metformin does not bring on a period. You would need Provera for that. But, in time for those who do get periods...metformin can make it a bit more normal and regular. This, however may take 6-12 months to fully work.

It depends from woman to woman,  and how serious the symptoms are.

For me, i was overweight, and i took metformin for years before getting pregnant. The first 6 months of my medication, Aunt flo was so erratic, sometimes, it comes twice in a month or not at all. So it does take some determination on your part to see this through.

All the best xxx
