Miscarriage and PCOS
Hi I was just wondering if there is a link between PCOS and miscarriage? I had a miscarriage a few years back and ever since then I have had nothing but problems with my periods. I don't know for sure if I have PCOS but my doctor suspects it as well as my friends and family. Before the miscarriage my periods were always on time and I never had any pain.
Miscarriage can be related to PCOS if you are insulin resistant or, have other hormone factors that would cause a non-viable pregnancy. You should have an AMH blood test, prenatal panel, thyroid check, and ultrasound to confirm PCOS. The thyroid, E2, progesterone, LH, and prenatal to make sure its not something else going on. The ultrasound and AMH to confirm PCOS.
25% of all pregnancies miscarry, so the fact that you had one is not a sure indicator that you have PCOS. I had 4 six week gestation or under pregnancies before being diagnosed with PCOS. I was found to be insulin resistant and was prescribed metformin. I have been given a 90% chance to carry to term next time I conceive and was told I should conceive within 6 mos. after my non-resistant (which can take up to 6 mos).
I had no period after my 1st and 2nd miscarriages and was prescribed provera to 'kick start' things. I was irregular some times before conceiving and have been skipping periods even more afterward, but it unless ruled out if can be from other health factors too.
One quick way to diagnose PCOS is to do a series of blood panels and include an AMH test. You can also see a lot of follicles on ultrasound which will help to confirm things too. Good luck!
