I was just diagnosed with PCOS a few days ago--I was born with a mild case of Adrenal Hyperplasia but was told by doctors it went away when I was about 12. (Adrenal Hyperplasia and PCOS are related and very similar) However, I never stopped showing a lot of the symptoms of PCOS and about a year and a half ago stopped getting my period. I went to the doctor about 6 months after not getting my period and the doctor seemed very unconcerned and didn't really do anything about it. After a year an a half and I still didn't get my period I went to a different doctor and discovered it was PCOS. I kind of figured it was because my older sister and one of my cousins also have it so I kind of saw it coming.
My doctor told me that I need to watch my diet and be sure to exercise and weight train. I already eat fairly healthy and am very active--I am a long distance runner and compete in races. Because of that, my weight is in check--I am a size 6, anyway. That's not terribly thin but it's not fat by any means. Anyway, my doctor kept speaking to me as if I need to lose weight--he told me I need to follow a low carb diet and such.
He didn't test my insulin sensitivity at all--is it possible that I can have PCOS without insulin sensitivity? I agree that I need to eat healthy--I already did. However, I didn't eat low carb because I'm a runner. I do eat mostly whole grains, fruits, and vegetables---I try to eat carbs with a low GI index. However, I do eat a lot of sweets so I could definitely cut back on that.
Other than cutting back on sweets, do I really need to cut back on carbs? I don't like meat very much and a high protein diet just doesn't suit me. Since I am a normal weight, is it necessary? I'm just worried that my insulin sensitivity (if it is there) will get worse, or that I will develop an insulin sensitivity if I am not sensitive already.
My weight history was that I was always a pudgy child due to my adrenal hyperplasia, but lost 30 lbs when I was 17. I got to be a size 6 and since then have not been able to get any smaller, although I think it's due to my over indulgence in sweets, not necessarily insulin sensitivity. I did gain a little bit of the weight back last year (about 10 lbs) but I have lost it all again.
