PCOS?

I just got my saliva test results (see journal for more detail) and b/c my tesosterone levels were high (56 pg/ml) and my dhea was high 25 ng/ml and b/c i have 2 spikes of progesterone, i'm beginning to consider PCOS as a diagnosis. however, while i have high cholesterol, my blood pressure is in the lower range 100/62. I have been doing a lot of research and have read that elevated levels of progesterone could mean pregnancy, but my holistic physician (who i'm beginning to think is an idiot) said that if I conceived, then implantation couldn't have occurred b/c my progesterone levels drop below the normal range after the 2 spikes. HOwever, I don't understand b/c my results show that on each day of my testing (saliva tubes) my progesterone never fell below 80 (which was CD 15) until I started AF on CD 29 and then progesterone was 41.
Does anyone know if elevated progesterone levesls have anything to do with PCOS and/or not conceiving? I know i'm not pregnant know b/c quantitative test on 5/6 said HCG was 2 (this saliva test was conducted from 3/19 to 4/14)

Basically I'm just trying to understand if I have PCOS or something else wrong...b/c my DHEA and Free Testosterone indicate possible PCOS...
I have an appt with GYN tomorrow. If I have PCOS, will she be able to tell by an ultrasound?

steph...
Well, i started the progesterone cream instead of the YAZ..just too many side effects to b/c pills for me, PLUS i don't want to screw up future fertility. I researched and researched and am SOOO GLAD i tried the cream! i felt great this month. I didn't start until CD 34, which is only the 2nd time EVER that i've been that late but it's either b/c of PCOS or progesterone cream but i don't mind! the benefits are so rewarding. This is a very mildly painful period and pretty light...i hope that's because of the cream!!!  I saw another doc too and he upped my thyroid meds and agreed i shoudl be on a low glycemic diet b/c i have hypoglycemia (instead of insulin resistance)

Thanks again for your past help!!

I'm glad to hear that everything worked out for you. I think most times, we have to take our health care into our own hands because if we waited for our health care system to do everything.. we would be no where. I'm glad that your doctor took action and something is finally being done about your pcos regardless of the blood tests. I hope everything works out!

take care.

Steph,(or anyone i guess)
Thanks for the post. I just got back from the gynecologist and she said I have PCOS. SHe said the same thing (steph did) about some ppl having all the symptoms, some not having any and some having in b/w.
I"m in b/w b/c i have the weight, acne, pain, hair, and anovluatory stuff....

She prescribed a low carb low cal diet (she's also a dietician) and told me to start YAZ. I'm not trying to get preggo right now but i've had so many bad experiences with b/c that i'm hesitant to get on ANY kind of b/c. But, she says it will fix my levels and my symptoms.....

we'll see.

I myself just went through the slou of blood work to test my hormones for PCOS. I have been dealing with ovarian problems for just over 2 years now and it was my naturopathic doctor that suggested i could quite possibly have the disease. I got my test results back and 2 of my levels were abnormal (however I am on the pill, and the pill can change the reading of the hormones). My doctor doesn't even feel it necessary to retest me for PCOS, she says that the blood results don't show anything. She has patients who have the disease and exhibit every symptom of the disease but test results don't justify it. My family doctor told my mom and I that you have to look at what the patient has been experiencing and what they are going through to make a clear diagnosis. I don't know if you were told this by your naturopath but you can get different readings between the blood test and the swab test for pcos. Naturopaths believe and research has been done, that the swab test can more often show better results because the saliva has had a chance to come in contact with organs and hormones where as the blood just passes through the veins and the arteries. However, some people take the swab test and the results come back normal and then take the blood test and they come back abnormal or vice versa. Like my doctor said, I think it all depends on what you are experiencing. If you exhibit the classic signs and symptoms of pcos than without a doubt, i would definitely look into it further.
I hope that helps!

take care,

steph
