Yes I've been checked for everything and everything came back clear so I know I don't have any STD. I just worry about the whole pregnancy thing cause my doc found it very suprising how I've had a regular period up until I had sex for the 1st time(no protection) and then my period just vanished so I have no idea what's going on with me right now. I just know all the symptoms I'm having are are symptoms directed toward pregnancy I just haven't had a test pop up and say positive.
Lol, yes! I didn't have sex for a really long time...and then I had sex finally Jan 2007 and boom, problem after problem. I learned I had PCOS in April of that same year.
Also, I want to point out and i didn't know this before...but your profile say's your 15, well at that age your periods can still be very irregular. But, since you are having sex it's a good idea to get checked out anyways. Have you been checked for STD's?
Alrighty will do but can having sex just all of a sudden cause it to stop my period completley? Thats what I'm really confused about
Well, I can tell you from my personal expierence...I gained 13lbs over the course of 3 or so months. My period each month became later and later and finally in jan 2010 I was 10 days late...and not pregnant. So, yes weight gain will affect your period. Cholestrol only in the past few months, research has linked PCOS and heart disease. She needs to give you an ultrasound to see if you have any of the classic cysts as assciated with PCOS.
Here is my list of hormones that would and SHOULD be tested for PCOS. I think that was how I was dx' with it:
Lutenizing hormone (LH)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Total and Free Testosterone
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS)
Prolactin
Androstenedione
Progesterone.
Other hormones that may be checked include:
estrogen
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
In addition, glucose, cholesterol (HDL, LDL and triglicerides) levels might also be assessed.
My doc done some blood tests and she tested cholestrol, insulin levels and male hormone levels and a couple others but everything came back fine and she still thinks its PCOS but she hasn't done an ultrasound or any exam basically. My appetite has picked up a lot though and I might have gained bout 13 pounds in the past 3-5 months and my stomach has been cramping a lot in my lower stomach and right above my belly button and i have tightness and i have always had a regular period but it just all of a sudden stopped after I had unprotected sex but all my hpt have come back neg and my blood test was neg so I don't know if that could have all of a sudden brought up the PCOS or what. What do you think?
You say you gained some weight...how much weight are we talking? Weight gain/loss can have an affect on your period. Mood swings are hormonal issues, so depending on which hormones your doctor tested...he might not have gotten the right ones checked out.
Here are some ways your doctor can tell if you have pcos:
Medical History. Your doctor will ask about your menstrual periods, weight changes, and other symptoms.
Physical Exam. Your doctor will want to measure your blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and waist size. He or she also will check the areas of increased hair growth. You should try to allow the natural hair to grow for a few days before the visit.
Pelvic Exam. Your doctor might want to check to see if your ovaries are enlarged or swollen by the increased number of small cysts.
Blood Tests. Your doctor may check the androgen hormone and glucose (sugar) levels in your blood.
Vaginal Ultrasound (sonogram). Your doctor may perform a test that uses sound waves to take pictures of the pelvic area. It might be used to examine your ovaries for cysts and check the endometrium (en-do-MEE-tree-uhm) (lining of the womb). This lining may become thicker if your periods are not regular.
No definitley not trying to get pregnant and no my doc never done an ultrasound or even hinted at wanting to get one done but im going to a different doc today to see what could be going on cause ive had a regular period up until I had sex (unprotected) and then my period just seemed to vanish so I don't know what could be going on but hopefully I figure everything out today whenever I go to the doc.
What did your Dr. say? It sounds like it to me which is probably something you don't want to hear. But besides the "normal" hormone levels you described PCOS. I think if you Google you may find you have something else similar to PCOS. Did Dr. do an ultrasound of you ovaries? Thats truly the only for sure way to tell if you're polycystic. good luck sorry you're having problems. Are you trying to get pg?
