I suppose it depends on when in your cycle the ultrasound was done and what type of ultrasound. However, I had dozens of ultrasounds at various times in my cycle and the cysts always were very apparent. However, all of my ultrasounds were transvaginal, it may be harder to see them on an abdominal ultrasound...I never had an abdominal ultrasound of my ovaries. On a transvaginal scan, this website shows what your ovary would look like if you had PCOS: http://www.advancedfertility.com/pcos.htm. To get a definitive diagnosis, a transvaginal scan would be your best option!
I don't have the actual ultrasound images, but I have the radiologist's report. It only says that normal flow is seen in both ovaries and no free fluid is identified.
The ultrasound is from 1 1/2 years ago. I had a high DHEA-S level (473) and my doctor sent me to get an ultrasound because she suspected a tumor of my adrenal glands. I've had all the symptoms of PCOS for years (I'm 20 now), but I guess PCOS isn't causing those symptoms. My endocrinologist put me on spironolactone but I discontinued it after a few weeks because of side effects.
I think it's highly unlikely but who knows. Do you have samples of your ultrasound?
Thank you both for responding!
Is it possible for cysts not to be visible on ultrasound? or is that highly unlikely?
yes...it was very obvious for me.
