pcos and high blood pressure

by Kiffert, Aug 22, 2009 10:57PM
I am 30 years old and diagnosed with pcos about 7 yrs ago.  I have always had problems with my blood pressure being a little high, but recently it has been between 170/100 to 185/115.  My doc has put me on bp meds, with beta blocker for my pulse (has been racing. around 80 - 90), and also put me on hydrochlorothiazide for water retention.  Is this high of blood pressure and pulse normal because of my pcos?  I am overweight, 230 lbs, 5' 7".  But I walk 2 1/2 miles 3 to 5 days a wk.  I have retained water for years, which i always figured was from my pcos.  No one in my family has bp problems.  I take 2000 mg a day of metformin.  I have also been having hot flashes with sweating.

Yes pcos can cause high bp, i am 25 and i weigh 122 lbs but i have high bp also.  I don't know if the increased heart rate is related, but i am also on a beta blocker bc my hr spiked up to the 160's.  very scary.  metformin can cause your kidneys to work harder causing water retention, i am on 1500mg i don't retain water but no matter how much water i drink ( i gave up soda and coffee)  i still get dehydrated and have horrible muscle cramps.  I don't know if the hot flashes are related.

thanks. At least I know where the high bp is coming from. Sometimes I feel crazy because if I am not dealing with infertility, or a loss (3 in first trimester, boy Mason at 18 1/2 wks, girl Bailey at 21 weeks), then I am dealing with symptoms of my pcos or health problems.  I thank God for my healthy little girl who is now 17 months old bu would love to get healthy so I can try for another child!
