24 hour urine/protein Please Read

Well I went for my doctors appointment today. I am 32 weeks. I came in with high blood pressure and after a retry it was down a little bit. I got a huge lecture from the nurse and it made me feel really stupid for the way Ive been eating! Like really. Now they gave me a jug to put all my urine in for the next 24 hours to see my protein levels. I have NEVER heard of this before.. Has anyone had this done or heard about it?? Also, what are the outcomes of high blood pressure during pregnancy? And if I start eating right can I bring it down quickly? Any answers please?

It is important to watch for certain things.....If your face hands and feet swell.....If start to feel tender below your ribs on your right side(by your liver)  if you have any vision changes( like blind spots or flashing in your eyes)  or if you get a head-ache.  These are things my Dr wants me to watch for and if and when I experience any of them I need to call them.  I hope this is helpful.

I am going through something similiar.  I was cooking dinner about three weeks ago and started getting blind spots in my eyes.  I called the Dr and they had me go into Ob.  I was there overnight because I was having contractions.  They did a 24 hour urine collection on me then as well and this was to measure the protien.  It came back high so they had me repeat it in one week to see if the levels were going up.  In the mean time my blood preasure has always been great.  The protien test they do in the office every visit always comes up negitive but the second 24 hour test came back higher so they talked about delivering early.  Im currently 37w 4d and they did amnio today to check for lung maturity,  Unfortunalty the lungs are not developed as much as they would like so they are going to monitor me a little longer and play the waiting game.  Danielle is completly right with everthing she told you.  It is important to try to eat as little sodium as you can.  Do your 24 hour test and follow up with the Dr about the results.  Not only is this dangerous for your baby but it also can make you sick as well.  I dont mean to scare you eighter ... Im freaked out with all this.  I dont think that changing your diet will make or break anything at this point but the Dr did tell me to stay away from as much salt as I could.
Let us know how things go for you.

I'm sorry you are having to go through this.. my sister who had her baby two years ago this April had to do the same thing.  They noticed her blood pressure rising and the put her on limited activity and had her checking her bp very often, if it got over a certain point they wanted her to call bc they would talk about inducing.. they also had her do the 24 hour urine specimen, this was to see if there was any protein in her urine, there was a small amount in that but they did another urine sample at the ob's office and there was even more so they induced her labor at 39 weeks, they'll watch you very closely because preeclampsia can be serious.  Luckily they watched her so carefully and took the baby when they did because her placenta had started to fail and Alysia's skin was sagging from that, she wasn't getting all her nutrients and such..I'm not trying to scare you I'm just letting you know what I know.. Goodluck and keep us updated!

I am sorry to hear that you are going through this.. doing a 24 hour urine specimen is for what they consider diabetics.. Although you may not be diabetic, they want to do a 24 hr .urine protein level because high bp can also cause diabetes... If you have protein in your urine, that mean's you are possibly diabetic.. I know this because my husband is, and he has to do 24 hr urine's all the time...
