38 weeks pregnant, perscribed vicodin

I was perscribed vicodin when i was about 4 months along for horrible headaches, I have a new ob now and he also perscribed me vicodin for my back aches. Obviousally it cant be that bad or else they wouldnt of perscribed it to me. My question is what will be the effects on my baby. I take up to 3 a day, and try not to take them everyday. I am 38 weeks along and i have heard stories about women getting there babies taken away because the baby tested positve for drugs. I have tried to talk to my doctor about it but all he says it will be fine. This is my first baby and I am so excited i just want to make sure she is born healthy. She is a very active baby inside of me. Does anyone know the effects that vicodin might have on a new born,

Hi, I can answer that question, I know it was an old question post, but in case anyone else needs to know. I had a cervical fusion surgery done about two weeks before I became preg., and I have nerve damage (the surgery was to help this) that I'm still recovering from, so my o.b. has had me on vicodin 4/day since my second trimester. My o.b. said that they don't really use the fda categories anymore, but instead look specifically at the test results and past history of any complications caused by vicodin. Also, any meds that have not had human testing are automatically placed on the category c list, regardless. Vicodin is safe, my o.b. said I need to taper off it during my third trimester (so the baby is not born addicted). Tapering is important to do during preg., instead of stopping cold, because withdrawal can cause your bloodpressure and heartrate to increase, as well as potentially dangerous swings in mood, and sleeping problems, caused by the serotonin decrease that happens when you suddenly stop taking vicodin. Please note, besides o.b.'s, most docs do not know what is safe during preg, and will prefer to prescribe nothing or stick to the fda categories for legal protection, if an o.b.'s opinion is not available.
Also, the situations where babies are taken away for testing pos. to drugs are when the mother is known to have taken illegal drugs, and the baby is tested -if testing pos. for illegal drugs or narcs w/o a prescript., then there will be a problem, but when a doc writes a prescript. then there won't be testing and even if there was the med is legal because of the prescript.

Hi Kyliesmommy,

I suggest you get a second opinion as Vocodin is a narcotic.  If you are interested in receiving a relaxation audio cd or mp3 please let me know.  I am a certified hypnotist and I have material I can send you at no cost to you.  Please send me a personnel message and I will be happy to help you.
Have a blessed Christmas... Steve Barlett

Vicodin is perfectly safe to take during pregnancy as long as you dont over do it. Just take the amount thye prescribed and you should be fine.

I don't know your answer, but I do know they won't take your baby! it's a prescription, so it's okay.. However, if they both prescribed it, it shouldn't be too bad.. All I know is if you take a lot, it might cause withdrawl in the newborn.. But I'm no expert.
