Anyone every try using a stethoscope to hear baby's heartbeat?

I get an email newsletter from babyfit and this week (20) they said you can try listening for baby's heart with a stethoscope on the outside of your tummy...Anyone try this before (at  or around 20 weeks).  I want to try BUT I am afraid I'll panic or freak if I can't find/hear it.  I keep getting these waves of anxiety (and nothing that seems to spark them...no cramping, no bleeding...no reason to worry!) that something will happen to the baby, like its heart will just stop etc.  It happens like once or twice a week.  I JUST had an ultrasound 2 weeks ago and everything was good...four chambers of the heart, on target for growth...I'd love to hear the baby's heartbeat at home but dh won't let me buy a doppler or rent one =(  BUT I could get my hands on a stethoscope very easily!

My girlfriend and I were walking through Venice (Italy) when I saw a pharmacy. I went inside and I asked if they sold a sthetoscope, they did and so I bought one. She is 16 weeks and I try to listen our baby's heart but I couldn't. It ***** because we wanted to hear it while in Venice, it's so romantic there.

Good luck future Moms!!!!

I was totally wondering the same thing, but I guess I'll just keep waiting to hear the heartbeat once a month at the Dr.  Anyone want to offer some advice on feeling the baby move?  I am 18 weeks and I think I can feel the baby, it is low though, under my belly button, I am just not sure if it is bowel movements/gas or actually the baby?

I'm going to keep an eye on the nurse's office today and see if I can sneak in and ask her...my appointment is wednesday with the doctor so I know I'll hear it soon enough but I like the reassurance!  Wish I had that doppler that I wanted!  I should have just been sneaky and gotten it and kept it in the closet or something lol

I tried from 9 weeks on to hear Sarah's heartbeat with the Stethoscope.  My neibor is a nurse and she gave one to me. I couldnt hear a thing untill i was almost 38 weeks.  If you do decide to get one dont freak if you cant hear anything.
They dont work for everyone.  it really depends on your body, the position of the baby

Good luck
:)
