At what age to pierce baby's ears?

Just looking for some people's opinions on when its best to purchase a child's ears. I know that this may be very controversial for people...so please..be honest...I work with a woman who is totally against it and wont her let daughter get her ears pierced until she is 12. Personally, I would like to get Sarah's ears done while she is little so she wont remember and so they will be completely healed by the time she would be able to "find them" or "play with them". Sarah is currently 10+ weeks old.....

What do you Momma's think???

I think the child should be able to say they want their ears pierced not made too.... Why put your baby through unnecessary stress? Also if you do get your babies ear pierced now, they wont be the correct position when she is older... I have worked in the piercing industry for 10 yrs and never will pierce an infants ears... Babies have a right to their own bodies.......

i was not allowed to get my ears pierced til i was 13... my daughter who is now 14 finally let them pierce her ears at the age of 6... i tried two times to get them done, and even got extra holes in MY ears to show her it didnt hurt and she refused... so 2 days before christmas when she was 6 i took her w/my mom (her grandmother) and she let them do them... she has since been very irresponsible and will put ear rings in without cleaning them and will get bad infections. she wanted a second hole so when she was 11 i let her get a second hole within 2 weeks i had to make her take them out and let them close because she not only lost the first set of piercing posts but 2 other pair as well, because she was playing with them in school.

i was told in feb that this baby is a girl, but a couple weeks ago i was told it MIGHT be a boy... well if it truly is a girl, i will be getting her ears pierced as soon as possible... that way they are healed completely and i wont have to worry about her messing with them. also the only thing (until she wants a second hole) i will have to teach her is how to clean ear rings before putting a differant pair in.. to prevent infections.

i look forward to seeing pics of your baby girls ears, good luck!

sorry ladies but im right against the whole pierced ears earfs.
My mother had mine done when i was a few months old when she took my older sisters. but i absolutly hate seeing a baby with pierced ears. one of my friends had her son's ear pierced at 18 months and i really think it looks horrible (well in england prob the clothes they put aswell).
I hope that when i have a daughter, when shes older she'll ask me for her birthday and i'll go with her and hold her hand. lol.

By the way i'm not saying in any form that anyone is wrong. No offence intended. xx

My DD pediatrician recommended waiting until 12 months, i got them done about 11 months and she was difficult to hold still. if i have another DD i plan to do them a lilltle earlier. DD is now going on three and doesn't pull at her earrings.

I called my doctors office because talking about this made me wonder.  They told me they don't pierce ears there :(  But they did tell me that once she's had her 2 month shots (which she has) to wait 2 weeks after that.  I asked where they recommend I go and the nurse told me her granddaughter got hers done at Piercing Pagoda in the mall and that they did a good job.  Just an FYI of info I got :)

Some years ago I worked at Claire's.  I did a ton of ear piercing in the nearly 5 years I was there.  Since she is already 10 weeks old that is good, take her shot records with you so you can show that she has had all the shots she is supposed to have so far.  Every place you go is different and a lot of places want to see that, some do not.
Next where ever you go to get her ears pierced make sure the person that does it knows what they are talking about.  Ask for the manager to do it, that way it is someone that has more experience.
Make sure your daughters earlobes look large enough.  I've had some parents bring in babies and their earlobes were soooo tiny or very very thin.... That is very hard to pierce when it is so small, more likely to end up crooked or something.
And gosh please when they mark her ears look at them very carefully to make sure they look even.
Oh and one more thing, make sure you hold her head extremely still when they pierce her ears!  You've got to hold her just like they tell you to so she doesn't jerk around, if she jerks it can mess up the piercing.
I've seen so many little girls with their piercings messed up because they weren't pierced straight through the earlobe and a lot aren't even across their face
Good luck!

The "mama-tree" LOL. It's so funny that you mention it. My daughter (still in utero) already displays so many of mommy and daddy's characteristics it's scary sometimes. For example, my dh and I always tell each other "you don't tell me what to do" in a loving, playful way of course. I'm thinking we should've stopped that early this pregnancy because now when the baby's squirming around and moving into extremely painful positions, daddy tries talking to her and asks her to "behave, you're hurting mommy" she gives me HUGE kicks as if to say "you don't tell me what to do." My dh and I just laugh, we couldn't expect she would be any different. :)

Oh, Wendy---i hope i didn't offend you or anyone else, i meant that coming out of my womb, with the way i am, she'd have to be a complete weirdo as compared to me---was not about other girls or other moms or anyone at all except for the contrast between me and my daughter.  I wasn't calling anyone else a weirdo for not wanting theirs done.  I would just affectionately call my daughter one if she didn't because it would be soooo far from the mama-tree, so to speak, lol.

Oh my goodness... I'm surprised that I'm the only one waiting until my daughter gets older to pierce her ears.  No judgement there at all... I'm just surprised.  I saw this question and thought there'd be a big range of opinions, but it looks like my daughter might be the only one in kindergarten without her ears pierced!  Lol... oh well.   =)

Good luck on Saturday... like others said, Tylenol is not a bad idea at all.

we had my daughters done at 3 months...we asked her doctor when the best time to get them done would be..he told us at 3 months because if she develops a fever she would be old enough for you to give her tylenol...and babies would were younger and could not recieve tylenol can get sick..all of my friends had girls and were told the exact same thing..so we were very comfortable with getting them done at that age...
although we did have one friend that said she didnt want to get her daughters until she was old enough and wanted them done..but she ended up getting her daughters done at around a year...

Give her Infant Tylenol beforehand, too. That'll help ease any pain (even though it's really not all that painful). Have fun! Take someone with you to take pictures of the event!

We went to Libby Lu's. They had the best price, not to mention they were certified in piercing baby's ears (Walmart and other places are not, at least not where I live). And they give you a cute little certificate when you're all done to put in the baby book!

I'm hoping to get my daughter's ears pierced at 6-8 wks old. This way I can ensure that they're cared for properly. :)

we got aubrees done right at 6 months.. the doctor said if you get it done before six months you run the risk of the holes not being even.. so we waited..

I got my daughter's ears pierced at 8 weeks old.  Right after she had her first round of shots.  She slept through it and we have never had a problem with her tugging at them.  Personally, I think because we did it so young she is just very used to them.

You're right- a lot of women don't like it at all on babies. But I am one woman who thinks it is completely adorable. My girls were baldies as babies and often confused for little baby boys because of the baldness.

So for my oldest daughter's 2nd birthday we went to get her ears pierced and I got her 6-week-old baby sister's ears done at the same time. The 2-year-old was far more upset about it (even though she wanted them) but my baby? She cried for a few seconds and then I gave her a bottle and she was perfectly fine. She never messed with them either.

I think it's better to take them when they're babies. Have a bottle prepared and when you're all done it'll be okay!

Now my daughters are 2 and almost-4 yrs old. They don't mess with their earrings and LOVE for me to change them out to match their outfits. I think the large, hoopy and dangly earrings look a bit ridiculous on babies and small children. But the little studs are SO CUTE!

I am just writing to "counter" your points (but mind you, I'm not doing it in a huffy, "I'm right and you're wrong" way... I hate it when people get all negative on this forum).

I don't necessarily think that someone is a weirdo if they choose not to get their ears pierced... I'm sure that the percentage of girls choosing not to get their ears pierced is pretty low, but I wouldn't call those girls weirdos.  I'm just saying.  =)

If you're going to teach your daughter to take care of her ears so that she doesn't get them infected, you really won't be able to start doing that until she's much older (obviously not while she's a baby).

I just base my opinion on my own experiences ... so I handled it well when I was 8, I assume my daughter will too (hopefully).  =)
