Ativan PLEASE READ

I know that I have posted in here before, but I am having high anxiety today over the ativan that I take during pregnancy... I am 10 weeks pregnant, and have had 4 ultrasounds... the heartbeat is 166 beats per minute and everything, the doctor says, looks good. I am on 1 MG of ativan down from 3MG's.... I have been on this drug for 8 years... I am just having concerns of mental redardation and deformaties... I am also on lexapro... did anyone take ativan while pregnant??? I am just so scared... please help with any advice, I desperatly need it today....

I am 7 weeks pregnant and was in the process of weaning myself off of Ativan when I found out(first day of my missed period). As soon as I talked to my midwife, she said to discontinue the ativan completely and to take Benedryl to sleep at night. I take Zoloft and that is safe during all trimesters. With regard to the ativan.. I have done alot of research and have found that in animal studies, only those given extremely high doses(20mg per kg) during the first trimester had defects. However, if the med can be stopped, it should be simply because we are humans and we do not know exactly how rat studies relate to human studies. As with most meds, if the benefit of the mother taking the med outweighs the risk to the fetus- most docs will recommend that you stay on the med.... maybe at a lower dose. It is scary, because noone wants to cause harm to the baby. My midwife said that I could see perinatologist.... I decided not to because I am going to keep this pregnancy nomatter what. If you would abort the pregnancy if there were anomalies, then a perinatologist is recommended.

It is in category D which is pretty bad.  I was on .5 mg 3x a day. My doc took me off as soon as I found out I was pg this time.  I went through withdrawls bad.  To me it was very worth it, but as I said, I did mc on monday this week.  Don't worry yourself too much, also have you talked to your doc about the meds?  They find out new stuff all the time, when I was pg with my son, it wasn't too big of a deal, now they just find more studies.  I suppose it's either hit or miss.  If you CAN get off your meds, do it.  If not, be sure to talk to your OB.

I was not on Ativan, but clonapin when I had my 8 year old.  I am still on that medication, and it is way stronger then the ativan.  My Son has no problems at all, but I did mc in may, sept and just this week.  I don't think it had anything to do with the meds as it does my age, but talk to your ob.  When you have anxiety, sometimes the attacks are worse than the withdrawls.  Hope that helps some, good luck.
