Baby Food

So my son will be 4 months on the 28th and hes about 21lbs now and 25 inches long. Which is actually a surprise to me because hes been packing on weight since he came home from the hospital lol, but for the past few weeks his weight has evened out and his weight have been pretty steady! I just put him back on cereal a couple days because he was drinking 8oz bottles and it wasnt always filling him up! He goes thru 4-5 cans a week, so i decided to start him back on cereal mixed 5oz-6oz bottles. At his checkup his pediatrician said at 4 months he can most likely start on baby food...im excited to introduce that to him! I have a feeling he is going to love food lol. My question is...when you start feeding baby food, do you still give them a bottle after the baby food?? Or do you cut down a few ounces on the milk??

I introduced cereal at 4 months because Franky was ready. I could tell because he sat in his highchair without toppling over, and was interested in what I was eating.  I started with cereal once a day I have never put it in his bottle.  I would just give it for dinner.  Then a couple weeks later I did breakfast and dinner.

5 months I added a veggie at lunch (gerber 1st stage)
5.5 months old I added a fruit mixed with his cereal
6 months old a veggie at dinner so by this point he was on 3 containers per day
I added snacks at this point like gerber puffs in between meals
7 months I added yogurt (yobaby and it's his fav food)
8 months I added scrambbled eggs, shredded chicken ect. Anything I can mash between my fingers (he still only has the 2 teeth on bottom)

Still offer the same amount of formula... they say the babies just practice eating but get main nutrition from formula until they are one year old and they will choose when they will drink less and eat more.  I usually would give his bottle with his meal (before or after) and use a little to mix with his cereal.  Now I am starting to try to stop the bottles with the meal and offer a sippy with the formula.  If your baby is anything like Franky he will still eat everything no matter what the order haha :)

Another tip is I always look up how much of what they are suppose to be eating for their age.  Babycenter has a good chart, and I make meal plans for him based off of the amounts.  But, doctor told me to let him eat however much he wants.  So, he eats all of his then crawls over to me to eat my food too lol.

I'm not sure how long they are good for. I'd check out the link Heather provided and chat with those ladies! I don't do the baby food so I don't know. I would assume that frozen they'd last at least 6 months or deep-freeze up to 12 months but that's just a guess.

Wow!! LOL I thought Brady was big at 6 months and 20lbs! He is tall though!
I'd say follow what Heather said. Definitely make sure that he has his bottle first. Just start slowly. I started Brady slowly at 4 months. I put him on cereal for the first month. Started veggies and fruits at 5 months and now that he's 6 months I've been giving him little things from the table. It's not a lot of food but he gets stuff at breakfast, lunch and supper. Now I'm thinking of starting snack foods.
You should join the baby food group if you haven't already!

Yes he is a fatty lol. I was thinking about pureeing ((spellcheck)) my own baby food. My sister did that because my niece wouldnt eat regular baby food. So i was thinking of getting a food processor and blending him fresh fruits, its healthier and i always have a ton of left over fruits & veggies, since my hubby doesnt care for them and im the only one who eats them. When you pour it into the ice tray to freeze how long is it good for?? Thank you for the tips btw (:

My 18-month-old is 22 lbs! What a sweet chunky monkey you have! My second daughter was always very, very ahead on weight. She's 4 now and is in her own clothing range now and has really slimmed down with activity though she still has a round toddler face that I know will lean out this next year *sniff, sniff*. I wouldn't worry about weight at this age; it is not a sign that he will become obese at all! Just a sign he is happy!

Anyway as far as food goes you asked what everyone else did so I'll tell you my experience. I have found there are sugars and preservatives and other junk in baby food so I avoid baby food and go straight to soft table foods around 9-10 months old. You could make your own baby food to avoid the processing that baby food goes through which strips them of almost all nutrition to ensure you know what is going in baby's mouth! Blending up some banana (and other fruits and veggies) and pouring it into ice cube trays to freeze will give you portion control.

Foods we typically give around 9-10 months are soft noodles, mashed potatoes (homemade; not the instant), avocado and other soft fruits (I find some canned fruits preserved in 100% fruit juices are softer than fresh fruit) and anything else baby can gnaw on.

his weight is good. my daughter is 2 yr old and she is 20 lbs 30 inches. so i would wait for couples of months because milk is the best food for babies till 1 year. if he starts solids then milk will replace

Doctor did a little estimate and said she thinks he will be around 6'2 my hubby is 6'3.  I am only 5'4 or 5'5.  I think the doctor will be able to estimate for you once he is a little older.  Also, he could surprise you both and be like 6'5.  My cousin Mike is 6'5 and his parents are only 5'8ish.  He is huge and only 17.... I like to call him Manchild he looks like a Viking lol we have other family memebers on my moms side that are very tall so he got it from his uncles.

Thank you Heather! Im gonna print this chart out lol! Mataio loves cereal! I gave it to him when he was about 2 months, mixed a little in his bottle to see if it would help him sleep, but it didnt. So i stopped it and gave him an extra ounce of formula instead. But lately i noticed hes been eating more and he gets fussy when he doest get enough. The cereal added to his bottle has been helping, hes been satisfied with 6oz cereal bottles most of the time. I give him 7ozs before bedtime and hes been sleeping a full 8 hours now which i love lol!
Hes been watching people eat and whenever someone has food he just stares lol.
Ill be sure to check out babycenter as well!
And he is hefty like Franky lol, so im sure he will be attacking food once hes able to eat it too!

Oh by the way Mataio will start to even out.  My boy was the same way by 6 months he was weighing about a pound less than he weighs now at 9 months old.  He is weighing 23 lbs now.  It's just now he is about 29-30 inches vs 26 inches.  So, instead of gaining more weight he will just start getting taller and I hear when they crawl/walk they actually may lose a little.  :)  But, don't worry he will still keep his cute little baby chubs... Franky is still chubby chubs!
