Baby Nursery Themes

What themes are people going with (if any) in their nurseries?

For many, many years I have known that if I ever had a little girl I would want to have a Wizard of Oz themed nursery.  I had all these grand ideas of doing half the room in black and white (or cream and white to create something closer to a "sepia tone")  and half the room in vibrant colors. I wanted a rainbow painted where it would run up the center of the wall and onto the ceiling so as to "separate" the two schemes. I wanted to have a yellowbrick road painted on the floor, or at least a large yellow rug. I even wanted to have a tree painted into the corner of the room and have "real" plastic tree limbs with leaves attached so that it would create a nice reading area with pillows on the floor below the limbs.
So many ideas!!

Well, now that I'm finally at that point I'm realizing just how difficult this would be to achieve unless we had extra large bedrooms for our children, which we don't. We have decided to do a Wizard of Oz theme anyway, but are trying to come up with new ideas on how to still create a unique nursery in a smaller area. I have TONS of W of Oz stuff (as I am a huge fan and collector) which we can put on high shelves around the top of the room, and I plan on finding a yellow rug for the floor. But as for doing any type of mural...I don't see how I can realistically do that.

Also, it's not like you can just pull up "Wizard of Oz" nursery collections, so I need some input. I'm going to do a search and see if I can find some rainbow type bedding and curtains, but would love to hear some creative ideas in case it doesn't work out. I'm already so exhausted in this pregnancy, and already so FAT! I need simple ideas that I KNOW I can get done asap. We will be picking up our nursery furniture this weekend. It's white, so it should go well with most anything.

Anyone??

I LOVE the Wizard of Oz.

My little girl room was ALL Wizard of Oz... I had light blue and yellow walls with a rainbow wallpaper border.  My bedding/curtains were plaid and gingham in multi-colored pastels.  I had Wizard of Oz EVERYTHING - dolls, nutcrackers, pictures, you name it.  THe pull chain for my fan were little ruby slippers, haha!

I would love to do a subtle Wizard of Oz theme in my (someday) baby's room.  We know we're not going to find out the gender so I'm wondering how to work it so it won't be too feminine in case it's a boy.  My ideas were similar - with black and white vs. multicolored... but no real references to the movie like outright murals, just subtle undertones.

This post made my day!  That nursery you described would be unbelievable! =D

What about the emerald city as a mural and a rug that is like the yellow brick road.

You have definitely been doing some thinking! LOL

I love the idea of making it more like an old farm house decor. I'll run that by my dh.
Also, I love the idea of using the blue and white gingham from her dress. If we leave the room the color that it is right now, we should easily be able to make the room look "old". I actually have a handmade Dorothy costume that I could use somehow. The dress and shoes, that is. I'll have to figure something out. Maybe make a pillow out of the dress? I haven't worn it in about 4 years, and it probably won't ever fit after this second baby is born, anyway! LOL

Thanks for the ideas...

Wow...thanks for all the input! I'll definitely have a look at what stencils are available, and check out the Wicked website. As for painting, we're thinking about keeping the wall color the same and just adding some detail. It is a light brown right now (sort of a dark cream, I guess?). If we can work with that, then we'll save a lot of time and money. Maybe I can throw in enough color in other areas to make up for having a neutral wall color?

Jonelle: I have a farm theme set that I'll sell you! :-) I was going to put it on Craigs list at some point, but we haven't gotten around to it yet (it's still in my son's nursery). It has only been used for 17 months! We plan on doing something different with his "new" room when we move him out of the nursery. I don't know if you'll be able to pull it up, but if you have a MySpace, here is the link to the blog I wrote (and posted pictures on) of Levi's nursery when we were almost finished with it. Let me know if you're interested and we can talk about it.

Okay here is my 2 cents on how you should decorate. I think you should skip rainbow curtains/bedding. That seems like it'd overwhelm the room. For a more classic look, paint the walls gold or a pale yellow. Then get RED bedding and curtains (like the ruby slippers--- you could even use GINGHAM like her dress, only in red). Use lace in the windows and them get red valances or panels that tie off to the side. That will bring you back to the era that the Wizard of Oz is set in.

Get a wooden rocking chair, antique stores usually have them. If it's too hard to sit in you can get a red rocking chair seat cushion.

I'd get the furniture in a mahogony, not white. White will wash out all the classy colors you're using.

You may also want to make the room look a little like her farmhouse, in regards to decor. Put up little wooden shelves for your Oz collectible items, put up pictures in wooden frames of frames from the movie.

You'll have yourself one very classy nursery! Not to mention it'll be a lot easier to change her room later, when she's into whatever little girls get into (Barbie and whatnot)!

Have you tried to look at art supply stores for large wall stencils? You could always paint the characters on, then when the baby outgrows the theme (or you get sick of it), you can just move your collectables in another room and repaint? Just an idea. Good luck.

I am personally not doing a theme or many decorations.. I get really bored, really fast with colors/decorations/furniture.. It's a curse! =)

I think you should paint the walls gold, or even a ruby red (like her slippers). That will give it a more "vintage" feel, especially if you have a lot of collectibles. I don't remember a rainbow in the Wizard of Oz?

Im did Conners room in Chocolate and Brown, since those are the colors I chose. I have a circle shape theme to go with it.

Im using the oak color for my baby, it's a darker oak color, and we bought our crib at walmart and it isn't a drop side, since they aren't always safe.

I painted the walls a bright blue on the top half, with chocolate color on the bottom half. I added nice colored circles on the blue part. I did white, baby blue, chocolate, colored circles.

I also made his curtains, which are brown sheer satin, with a blue valance cover, and sheer blue circles. We also painted his name on the wall with matching colors.

And thats about it I do believe lol.
