Blood when I wiped Scared

So I went to the Er on Saturday because I couldn't void my bladder. I was given a Catheter and sent home. Monday I went to my Dr and he removed the Catheter and did a pelvic exam and pap smear. He said I have a very severe yeast infection. Last night I started my first treatment and this afternoon when I wiped I saw a little speck of RED blood. I can't remember if this normal after a pap smear? I then saw more RED blood this evening. I'm a little scared. I've made it to almost 12 wks and we heard the heartbeat on doppler yesterday at Dr office.  I don't want anything to go wrong!

Can any of you ladies tell me if it's normal to see blood after a pap smear? Have you had one during pregnancy? It's been two years since my last pap smear and thats why he did one.

Maybe the medicine you are applying while you still have an open scratch from the pap is making you bleed more? I know I waited for 4 days after I got my pap done (and bled) to start applying the metro gel , just in case.

Yes I'm using an applicator. It's a prescription he gave me. A tube of cream and one applicator. I gotta use it 7 nights I hate it when they only give you one applicator I gotta wash it and reuse it. I didn't have any blood on the appli ator first night but did last night.

You guys have really helped to reasure me that everything is gonna be ok. Thanks ladies.

yep i agree did you use an applicator for the yeast infection? i had one too and apparently my applicator caused bleeding so that could be it too!! but things like pap smears and stuff can definitely cause bleeding and you dont have any other bad symptoms so i think your good!!

The nurse called me back she said it's most likely from the pap and the reason it was worse when I got up was because while you lay down the blood pools in the vagina. Since I already have an ultrasound set for tomorrow I'm just suppose to monitor the bleeding and talk to the nurse again when I go in tomorrow.

This is just so scary. Thank you all for your comments.

I had red blood from 12- 24 hours after my pap. I hope they will get you in to at least reassure you. Stay positive, I'm sure everything's fine!

Yesterday I only saw a couple specks of blood now it's every time I wipe and red blood mixed with pink discharge. I just called the dr office they don't open till 9. I'm waiting on a call back from the nurse. The strange thing is that I had the pap at like 2:30 Monday afternoon and I didn't see any blood till Tuesday evening over 24hours later and now it seems to be a little more at 36 or so hours later.

It's reasuring to hear that this is probably normal and with the really bad yeast infection and swelling I have going on it's probably just my cervix iritatex from the pap smear.  Thanks ladies for all the reasurance. I'll update you guys when the nurse calls me back.

I was told that you could spot for 12-25 hours after a pelvic exam.  Also, my midwife told me that when you spot (especially at 12 weeks), the majority of the time the baby has already stopped developing, but you heard the heartbeat so that's a great sign!

I'm hoping the bleeding/discharge is nothing serious!

it is normal to spot after a pap. there is so much blood by your cervix and the blood shouldnt be coming from the baby or placenta. my doc said i could even spot after a transvag because the cervix is so sensitive. i love my doppler it is so reasuring when im worried (which is all the time!).

What do you mean it's gotten worse? Pink blood is usually nothing to worry about. Trust me I had the works. I had pink blood, brown blood and bright red blood. My baby is completely fine. You heard the heartbeat on your doppler which is an excellent sign. Please keep us posted. Definitely call your doctor so they can reassure you though. I know how scary seeing blood is.

I bled after my pap smear last month. It sucked, I hate seeing blood down there when I'm preggers! but it went on for a couple of days after the pap smear, but just a veeery little amount.

So sorry you are going through this. I had many instances where I spotted bright red too throughout this pregnancy and it scared me too. I spotted after a pap a few weeks ago so it is normal. My midwife even warned me that this could cause spotting and not to be alarmed. I used my home doppler for the first time last night and it measured anywhere from 44- 160 beats so it definitely varies widely. It's normal because the doppler also picks up sound waves from other things going on in your body ( your heartbeat, the placenta, your pulse, etc.) As long as you heard the heartbeat  I would not worry.

Hope that helps!

The bleeding has gotten worse now I've gotten pink discharge the last two times I've went to the bathroom. I will be calling the Dr as soon as the office opens.

I was told at my hospital visit on the weekend that seeing a little bit of blood after a pap is completely normal and not to stress out. I hope you can try to stay relaxed and that this will just be a little bump in the 9 month journey.

Well, the good thing is there IS a HB :)
Some of those things don't really work the way we want to, or even well at all. If there is a HB then baby is still hanging in there. But still......tell your doctor tomorrow, and let me know how the ultrasound goes :)

I found the heartbeat but I don't know if the thing counts right. First time I looked at it it was in the 130's then the 150's and at one point it was 174 and watching it go down.

That is a good idea, using the doppler. And yes, do talk to your doctor. Bright red blood, spotting....I think it's from your pap smear. I think, and hope, baby is and will be fine.

I've only seen a couple specks but it's bright red. If it gets worse I will be calling the Dr in the am. I have weekly ultrasounds and it's scheduled for thursday. I hope that I can wait till then. I am going to use my home doppler in a minute to see if I can find the heartbeat.

Hi Britt,

I'm sorry you are going through this. I would be scared, too. I will tell you this. Bleeding after a pap smear is common due to the tiny brush scraping the lining of the cervix. This type of bleeding does not cause any damage. It tends to resolve on its own.  BUT, the bleeding from a pap smear should be light, like spotting.
I would call the doctor in the morning if you aren't in any kind of pain. If you are worried about your baby and can't wait then go to a hospital, get an ultrasound done and make sure baby is ok.  Let your doctor know about this, if it doesn't resolve...k?
Good luck sweetie.

PK.
