Can you clarify OPK question for me?

If you used an OPK and detected your surge, then tested again the next day and it was negative, does that mean you ALREADY ovulated?  AND if you did already ovulate, how long is the egg viable?  I know the OPK shows ovulation is going to come 12-48 hours later...but I wasn't sure if the negative following the surge meant it was too late.

Here's the background if you want to read it...I got my positive at noon yesterday.  DH was unable to flippin perform last night due to a cold and cold meds.  Grrrr....we tried so long and so hard and he just couldn't do it!  :(   :(  :(  Are you kidding me!!?!?!?!??!?!  All that money and stress waiting for my surge and then NOTHING.  Anyway, I am just wondering if we are too late to try this month if the OPK isn't as dark today as yesterday.  It's still pretty dark, but not quite as dark as yesterday.

We BD Sunday morning, Monday night, none last night (surge day!) , but we are going to try again tonight.  I just didn't know if it was too late.  :(  *sigh*

Well if the test line is dark or darker than the control line, that is still a positive. If your test line is lighter than the control its a negative.  I beleive from what i read you have 24 hours after the egg has been released. The thing with opk's is if your not testing every hour its hard to pin point the exact time you got a positive, because from the point of positive surge you got about anywhere from 12-48 hours that your egg will be released, thats why sometimes some women have positive surge for 3 days, thats because the egg has not been released but there is high amount of lh, i think people who test positive then the next day its negative, i think they already had a surge hours before they took the test, we dont think about that, but those hours matter when ttc and determining how much time you have b4 no more surge.  U bd monday, day b4 surge so im sure those swimmers were waiting, that was less than 3 days, some people like to go on the fact sperm lives for 5-7 days but for the sake of ttc, in my mind i think the sperm is dead after 3 days lol(only bcuz im ttc) i would still bd tonight:)
