Does Progesterone Help Prevent MC?
Hi ladies, I just got my bfp yesterday faint/today two strongs...I have my appointment for blood work on Friday the 22nd, and I am just curious, since I had a mc in December with my first pregnancy, does progesterone help prevent mc? A lady I work with said I should ask for it, but I didn't get to ask her more...She has had two mc's and she said she asked for it with her third pregnancy and all was well. Does anyone know about this? I'm a little nervous, as I have been crampy like AF since 4dpo...Doctor said not to worry and it was probably implantation etc.
Hiya just ask them for a progesterone test,thats all you need to do,they will tell you to ring in few days,they will simply say,make an appointment with your doctor,or that the results are normal..
They do the blood right at the doctor's office, so I can call them in the a.m. and see if they can have the doctor order it and I can run on over...do I need to ask them for specifics? Obviously progesterone, cause that is what I am interested in...
Well you don't actually have to go into your doctor to get your blood drawn. Most of the time they'll fax your paperwork to Lab Corp or Lab One or whoever you'd go to for the bloodwork. You could go in any time this week.

Do you think it is okay to wait for my bloodwork appointment with obgyn on next friday...my regular doc didn't seem to think bloodwork was necessary before then...When I go to the obgyn, I'll definately ask them to check on the progesterone...but do you think it is okay to sit on this for a week?
There are no studies that indicate that progesterone pills or suppositories prevent a miscarriage. That said, I have low-normal progesterone levels. My fertility specialist and my OB both agreed that I would need to supplement my natural progesterone with 200mg pills from weeks 10-13. You should discuss the positives and negatives though with your doctor since there are both. Most doctors and REs won't prescibe it unless there is a medical necessity (lower levels of progesterone). It really isn't good to take medication if you don't need it. I would just ask them to check your levels each time you get an hCG draw. That will tell your doctors if your body is having a difficult time producing enough to maintain the pregnancy. If it is on the lower end, they might prescribe it to you. Congrats on your BFP! I know you have been TTC for a while ;)
As tarajanes said, most miscarriages are caused by a chromosomal issue. However there are other miscarriages that are caused because of low levels of progesterone. Progesterone is necessary and vital in supporting a pregnancy.

My general practitioner just called me to tell me he is thrilled with our news...and to tell me that he didn't think that I needed the progesterone...and that he thinks it is over-hyped, and that if I want a second opinion I can ask my obgyn BUT that he didn't think writing me a script for it was necessary or even warranted. He seemed really positive and I felt better after talking with him. =) Thanks for sharing all your experiences and knowledge!
i had 2 MC's this year in 5 months. so even though my progesterone level tested normal, my RE put me on baby aspirin and progesterone supps from 3 days after my surge and O'ing and i get to stop this sunday when i hit 13 weeks. so i hope that it helped me since this is the furthest i have gotten in a pregnancy but there is not mich medical research that says it does.

This is my first pregnancy and we had to use infertility medication so my doc did not want to take any chances so ive been on it since 3 days after i ovulated. Its only going to help if you have low progesterone as the supplements helps with that. good luck!
I had the same concerns when I became pregnant after miscarrying my first. A gal I work with had 2 miscarriages, then took progesterone with her next 2 and had healthy babies. So of course I went into paranoia mode! Doctors generally don't do hormone level testing until you've had repeated miscarrages so my doctor told me not to worry.... all other signs were pointing towards a healthy pregnancy, so I just waited it out. I trust my doc 110%...and my husband and I have a very good relationship with him so I am confident that he will give me the right advice etc. I was soo positive and confident and then all of a sudden everything kind of hit me and I got spooked! I need to just relax and think positive and be positive...probably talking to him will help too!
I can tell you that I asked my doctor about taking that (since you know I m/c'd around the same time you did) and he said that I am not considered high risk. He didn't even check my progesterone levels. BUT, I also took a progesterone supplement the cycle I got pregnant because I wasn't ovulating and I took to help ovulate (obviously it worked). So both him and his nurse said it wasn't anything to worry about. I am being treated the same as someone who is pregnant for the first time. Try not to stress about it if they say no (about needing it), because I worried a little too much about it and I was fine. It is all up to your doctor though. Like other women said, it is hard to say why a m/c happens, unless we know for sure that we did something to possible risk losing the baby. Just relax and trust your doctor (if you don't then I would find a new one).
Well, my obgyn wasn't going to do a blood test for another 12 days, so I called up my doctor to ask if he'd call me to talk about this and maybe get my blood tested sooner to determine if I'd be a candidate for it. The obgyn was pretty confident we had our mc for chromosomal abnormalities and that we would go on to have another healthy pregnancy...I think I'll feel better if they take some blood lol!

i knew my progestrone was low because my luteal phase was short. the second i got pregnant i talked to my doctor about it. my progestrone level wasn't dangerously low, but on the low end of normal. she put me on suppositories from about 7wks-12wks. after that, the placenta takes over. good luck!

THANKS! I called and left a message for my general practitioner because he made me promise to call as soon as I found out I was pregnant...because on Thursday, he had a hunch =) Well, I think he'll probably call tonight...he usually calls in the evening to check on us if we are sick etc. so, I can ask him when he calls...I know it is best to get info from a doc or pharmacist but I was just wondering if anyone here had any info...some ladies know so much they seem like doctors lol! Thanks for touching base with me!
I can *try* and understand how hard it must be for you after all you have been through, but I think it is best to ask your Dr. about actual rx's and their benefits (or call your local pharmacy and ask to speak to the pharmacist).
You must be soo nervous. I am sure your dr. would love to hear from you about this! If it helps, I am sure he could call in the rx for you so you dont have to wait 10 days until your appointment?
