with my first, my doctor advised one and I was open to the idea, but she thought it would speed up labor as it had been 14 hours since my water broke and I was at a three. by the time the meds wore off several hours later, I was only at a four. it completely stalled my labor and I ended up developing a uterine infection because I didn't have my son until 26 1/2 hours after my water broke. if you're in my.situation, a benefit could be that it could speed.the process up, but there's really no way to tell if it actually will or if it does.the opposite.
I was completely against another one for myself the next time, but for.some women they wouldn't imagine going without. I'm going to try no pain meds this time but my doctors are a little wary as I'm expecting twins

Also epidurals do have risks to the baby, but they are risks not necessarily what will happen.  Epidurals can make the baby very sleepy and they can have respiratory distress.  Their heart rate can drop and they can have trouble breastfeeding from the effects of an epidural.

I've had 2 births without ANY pain meds but I know you want to hear both sides. I know you know how much better it is for your birth experience without one but something you should keep in mind.  I always laugh at women who say they felt contractions at 3-4 cm and they were so horrible that they got an epidural.  NO! Yes, they were in a ton of pain but they still have no idea evn the ones that say it wore off and they could feel everything.  What some women dont realize is you are only allowed so much epidural pain meds. When you run out, that's it. The reason you think that the pain is so bad, even though you are still missing a lot of the pain is bc you just went from no pain at all to starting to experience it out of no where.  Also: the epidural DOES NOT cover the birth of the head, you will still feel the stretching and burning. Epidurals can both slow down and speed up labor so that's something to consider also. There are many many things I could list as for reasons not to have one. But, something you definitely need to do, if you cannot handle the pain less than 5 cm dont waste anytime, just get the epidural.  Labor and contractions get harder and faster  and more painful the closer to delivery. For me I literally had contractions back to back as in as soon as it started to relieve it came right back within 6seconds.

The only benefit is no pain and I got mine at a time that made it so I could rest during the last 4cms and transition so that I could have energy to push. I had been in labour all day and was feeling completely defeated and like I had nothing left in the tank. I had it and three hours later I pushed my son out, who was 9 pound 1 oz, in 37 mins and truly don't believe I would have been able to do it if I'd kept labouring through those last 3 hours. I have heard the recovery time is longer if you've had an epi, and because of the catheter I got a terrible bladder infection, but you just have to do what you feel is right for you at the time. I don't regret having mine and although I'm hoping to avoid it this time and hopefully have a quicker labour, I'd do it again. Good luck and all the best :)

Epidurals does not work for everyone, so to each its own.  If you're having thoughts of tryig it I wouldn't suggest it because it's not that effective.  I guess it depends on how intense your labor is.

The only benefit is that you dont feel the pains. If its done right. Not to scare you cause im planning on getting it.. but my sis said with one of the pregnancy it only worked on half of her so she felt the pain on one side and not the other.. but it doesnt harm the baby at all so so thats another benefit(:
