I used to be terrified of needles too!! I was determined with my first baby I was going totally natural!! Well that plan didn't work!! She wasn't dropping n doc ordered an ultrasound, she had the ambilical cord wrapped around her neck plus her head was too big to fit!! I was gonna have to have a c-section..I got the epidural and I was scared, but it wasn't even close to what I thought hun!!! The only thing you feel is the shot to numb the area first!! It's not even half as bad as it seems....now I'm nor scared of needles anymore, especially with this being my fourth baby..get lots of needles while preggers n then while in hospital..so I'm used to it now!!! =) goodluck hun..
The pain from the needle will be nothing compared to contractions.
there are other medications they can give you that go through your IV so you dont have to get injected with them. A lot of times they wont take the pain away completely but will ease it or make it more tolerable. A lot of times women will opt out of them because they will also affect the baby and many women do not want their babies born "drugged". The nice thing with the epidural is that it does not effect the baby, which is also true if you went natural. I did not want any medication and used the epidural only and plan on doing that again for this baby.
It really was not bad at all.
I'm doing some research to see if there is anything else to get besides the epidural, just something to ease the pain. I just want to avoid the epidural as much as I can lol.
its natural to be scared and nervious, having a baby is a big deal and there are so many stories out there it is hard to assume the best. Just realize you can get through it and at some point will probably be willing to go through it again! Just look into the diffrent options and be as prepared as you can, especially if you decide to go for a natural birth.
I was in the hospital a few weeks ago and I was so tired and dehydrated they fought with me about putting in IV in me. I did not want it, I don't like things being poked in me or anything, especially when they have stick something in me and leave it in there for a while. I would not move my hand (they put it in the side of my wrist), and I made them cover it up so I can't look it at. I don't even like taken tylenol when I'm in pain right now and all I have to do is swallow a pill lol, let alone someone poking me in my spine. Idk, I'm just scared and nervous :(
I have to say you might like needles, but it is a diffrent thing when you are in a lot of pain and you know that needle can make the pain go away. Its funny how pain will lead you to doing things you wouldnt normally. I had an epidural for the first and honestly it did not hurt to get, in fact I never even saw the needle. I just sat at the edge of the bed and did my best not to move and it was over very quickly without complication.
I have had completely natural and an epidural. Definately wished I would have gotten one the first time do that I could enjoy the birth more.
So I went into my labor with my son hoping for a natural childbirth, but prepared to ask for an epidural if needed. I ended up with a very long labor and halfway through the second day asked for the epidural. At that point, I didn't care if they severed my spinal cord, I was done! lol I believe though that if I had had a shorter labor, I may not have needed it. I don't remember the needle hurting - at least not much. And I feel I really had the 'perfect' epidural as I was still able to move and feel the contractions and push - it just didn't HURT anymore.
So I would say, don't let the video scare you. Go into your labor with a plan, but be willing to make adjustments to it if needed. In the end, a healthy baby and mom are all that matter. Good luck!!
