Epidural

Soooo I'm planning on an epidural and I wanted to hear from those of you who have already had one! I want to know everything like do the effects fade away after a while, what if I'm in labor and get one and its taking so long that I have to get another one? I would love to hear some stories :)

I was given a small amount of pitocin afterwards to help with gettin the placenta & all extra blood out , I freaked out because nobody warned me about that but it wasn't bad at all in my opinion

Another question Lol sorry!!! After my cousin gave birth if I remember right her pitocin wasn't completely empty so they made her finish it. She said it was the WORsT pain ever. Do they really make you finish it even if your baby is already out?? Sounds super weird.

I was there during her entire delivery and boy has she tramatized me Lol -_-

I got my epi at 4 cms & it helped so much , around time to push they brought my dosage down so I slightly felt my contractions so I knew when to push . Pushed for 5 minutes & she was out , was up walkin within an hour

Yes its threw an IV so if your labor is prolonged and the bag is empty you get more.

Yes, they can give you more medication through your epidural.

My cousin had her baby last month and got the epi when she was around 4 cm then around 7-8 cm her pain was so ridiculous that she called the nurse to tell her how much pain she was in and they sent up the dude to refill her epi.

My question is I didn't know you could refill your epi??? Have any of you done this or aware of this?

I had the epidural with my first, I was stuck at 4cm for over 5 hours, after the epidural I dilated to 10 within 3 hours, it was fantastic. My second was induced and I didn't have any pain meds and OMG. This baby I'll definitely be getting the epidural.

The epidural is the best thing man could have made. I had my first two natural and an epidural with my 3rd. Its going to feel like cramps but in your back. It isnt so bad as far as any pain goes. Im 15 weeks with my 4th and planning on getting an epidural. Best of luck

You don't really feel the needle it felt like pressure to me. But imagine I had to sit there 1 1/2 hours leaning on my sister having painful contractions crying my eyes out being told not to move!

My epidural didn't go so smoothly it took 1 1/2 hours to get it in it took the man 5 different pokes at my spine!!!! Then when I started pushing I felt all my labor in my left hip!  I could of punched someone in the face!!  After it was over with I was walking within a hour. It makes me so mad that my sister 2 epidurals went so smoothly! She basically laughed her kids out!!!  She was induced though, I wasn't my water broke on its own and the gave me potossin (however its spelled) to make my contractions stronger. I'll be having baby #2 at a different hospital, because I moved 5 hours away so if I make the decision to get the epidural I hope it goes smoothly. I want to try natural with no meds this time and my dr in supporting me on this,  my last dr discouraged me :(

I have had two and plan on a third everyone has a different expieriance.
But mine went very well with both I was 3-4 cm already I had waited until it was unbearable before arriving at the hospital. As soon as I got it I was greatly relieved and more comfortable. I have short labors. So I progress quickly. Within. An 2hrs with my first 1hr with my second. So it didn't take long after I received it thankfully. And it is put into an IV so they gave me a button to push to regulate how much I received it could be released every 10 minutes. So I chose when I needed to be relieved for the most part. All hospitals are different though.
It severely takes the edge off but you will still feel pain at least I did.
And I only pushed maybe 5-10 minutes if that.
I tore first time and was cut the second and had no idea at the time.
Nor did I feel being stitched.
I was up within 30-40 min after breastfeeding and meeting baby and getting rid of everyone lol

I had one with my son...I was already 5cm when I went in to the hospital and shortly after I got my epidural. I loved it! It took all my pain away and my hubby and I could enjoy the experience without me screaming (I don't handle pain too well lol). The only downside with it was that I couldn't feel to push the nurse had to feel my belly and watch the monitor to tell me when to push bc I felt nothing :) but 30 mins after my son I was up and walking! I wanna try natural with this one but I will definitely get the epidural if it gets to be too much.

I recommend holding out for an epidural until you're at least 5cm, then assess the pain of the contractions and decide if you really want one. The reason to wait is so that progress doesn't come to a standstill. Many times over, epidurals effect the labor hormones and in turn slow contractions. If this happens, there's a higher chance of a domino effect leading to a cesarean birth after many hours of labor. Not sure how you feel about cesarean birth for yourself. These are some things to account for in your birth plan. Congrats and good luck!!
