Falling HCG and progesterone

Hi,
I was wondering if falling HCG levels always mean miscarriage.  My level recently went from 2025 to 1871 in 2 days.  I have had increased spotting and some bleeding in the past week.  I had an ultrasound on Spetember 2 which showed 5 week gestational sac, but empty (5 weeks corresponds to date of my LMP).  I also have a question about progestrone levels.  My progesterone levels fell from 53 to 25 to 16 prior to knowing my HCG levels.  Does falling progesterone cause or contribute to falling HCG levels?  If my progesterone supplements had been upped by my doctor, could this have been prevented?  I go in Sept. 8th for an ultrasound, but was basically told I will miscarry.

I have been on progesterone supplements for a number of months due to finding out I have low progesterone levels 7 dpo ( found out while trying to get pregnant with my son).  When I found out my HCG level on the 3rd, I was told to up the dosage of prometrium from 100mg to 200mg.  When my HCG level dropped, I was told to stop the prometrium due to the impending miscarriage.  I go for an ultrasound on the 8th, but, at this point, I am in the process of having a miscarriage.  I passed some tissue earlier this afternoon and have had the spotting turn to bleeding, which has been pretty consistent.  I am pretty much just numb at this point....

i think both ladies above answered this very honestly.  the dropping levels of hcg are not a good sign.  i do know that progesterone levels can vary hour to hour during pregnancy but dropping hcg is not normal.

what did the doctor say?  did they schedule another ultrasound?

The fact that your progesterone is dropping may mean impending miscarriage. Low progesterone can cause you to miscarry. It is VITAL to have during pregnancy. It might not be too late. Ask your doctor for progesterone supplementation and see what happens.

Progesterone levels wouldn't have an effect on your hCG levels.  They are two different hormones.  For example, with my current pregnancy, my hCG levels continutally rose, but my progesterone levels were on the low end.  So, during weeks 10-13 I was told to take 200mg of Prometrium orally to help maintain a within normal range level.  By taking additional progesterone, this had no effect on my hCG levels.

But, anytime your hCG levels are declining, it usually is indicative of a miscarriage.  Sorry you are going through this.  I was in your situation in March.  It is tough...
