HCG Levels Droped at 7 weeks

Hi,

My girlfriend is now 9 weeks pregnant. She has had 2 previous misscarrages withing the first trimemester. Because of her high risk the doctor had her take HCG levels blood tests. The fist tests were done withing the 6th week and the doctor said that they were normal. However during the 7th week they dropped so the doctor ordered another test and an ultrasound. Both of these came back normal. My question is what happens if the HCG levels drop at any time during the first trimester? Is this still cause for concern even though they came back up to what the doctor says is a normal level?

Thank you.

Well, if the dr. said the results from the scan were fine, Im sure there was a heart beat then.....HCG levels get to a point in pregnancy and they will stop going up and start leveling out......

That's the thing. The ultrasound was taken during the 8th week. I asked the rep to look and see if it was noted anywhere on the report from the ultrasound that a heartbeat was detected. She said it wasn't noted. But the doctor said that the results from the scan was fine.

Well, by the 9th week there should be a heart beat, unless she was off on her dates. But you just had a u/s that confirmed she was 9weeks, right? What did the dr. say?

Went to the clinic last night. The rep told me that the ultrasound did not state that a heartbeat was detected. So I'm now here trying to figure out what they are basing their findings on. I guess the progression of the fetus.

Well the doctor said that the HCG levels dropped during the 7th week. The test during the 8th week the doctor said the results were "Ok". I didn't get any numbers as this is the information that I got from my girlfriend. I also don't have any details on the ultrasound only that they came out fine.

Can you tell us the different levels for the different days because you just say that they went to an "okay" level. Did the doctor actually say that they dropped or that they weren't high enough? And when you got the ultrasound what was seen on the screen?

Thanks for the reply carissarae,

The doctor to my knowledge never suggested progesterone test. But she had 2 other previous miscarriges which makes any sign (especially a drop in HCG) something to be concerned about. The drop in HCG only happened once when we tested in the 7th week. On the 8th week the doctor said it showed ok so I guess it raised back to a normal level. We haven't done any further HCG tests to see if it went back down and this is just the 9th week. We did an ultrasound the the doctor said it was fine. I guess we will have to wait.

i didnt read your post before i responded to his. i have personally never heard of anyone with declining hcg levels having a normal pregnancy afterwards. like you said maybe a progesterone problem which could be medicated but i thought they checked the two seperately? or are the two linked to each other? ive never had my doctor talk to me about progesterone levels so i have no idea bout those. i know with my miscarriages the first sign was declining hcg

carissarae,
I have to disagree with you on that... Like I said, it happened before my daughter born.. And that's not why she was stillborn.... I had to go on medication to keep my level's up.... It could be a progesterone level problem.

the only time hcg levels drop is when there is a problem with the pregnancy i believe, meaning miscarriage, ectopic and such

If the HCG level drops and then rises again it could possbily be that she needs to have her progesterone level tested.....If that is too low, the dr. might need to prescribe something to keep the level's up.. This happened to me right before Hailley (my daughter who was still born) she was born.......

Thanks for your reply  leighanne,

Yes she did have them done again and the doctor said it was ok. The question is even if the HCG levels raise back up to an ok level after they have dropped is there cause for concern?

if the levels drop it usually means that the person is going to miscarry.  very few women have had levels that drop and then have healthy pregnancies.  Did she have her levels done again?
