Help on Pre-natal vitamins

Could you please tell me what type of pre-natal vitamin worked for you and what I should be looking for...  Should I consult my doctor in regards to taking extra folic acid or will the over the counter pre-natals be enough until we've conceived??

Thanks!

I have been using the One Source also and I like them alot.  They are nice because its 2 small vitamins instead of 1 horse pill sized vitamin. So I take them at night before bed.  The only problem I have had is if I take them on an empty stomach I always throw them back up an hour later.  At my first doctors appointment my doctor told me that over the counter prenatals work just as good as prescription and are more gental on your stomach because (and I quote) "Prescription prenatals have a bunch of extra junk that you dont REALLY need in them."

I used PrimaCare One with a prescription from my doctor, and I LOVED them. I took them for a full 2 months prior to conceiving, then at around 6 weeks pregnant I stopped taking them because I got severe "morning" sickness that has lasted pretty much my entire pregnancy, and the vitamins were hard on my tummy... then I took Flinestones and still do, per my doctor's recommendation. I was told that there is plenty of folic acid in the prenatals, and you don't need anything extra if you plan to breastfeed (though I'm sure it can't harm anything)... but I still eat Total cereal every morning because it was a ton of vitamins and 100% folic acid (plust I've been craving cereal and milk like CRAZY during my pregnancy!) in addition to taking Flinestones..... Best wishes!! :)

I also used the One Source from Walmart. I would reccomend also pairing a vitiman with Expectra lipil if you are planning on breastfeeding, if not I don't think it is necessary! I am not breastfeeding but I sill take my prenatel vitiman. My son is 10 weeks

I buy One Source brand from Walmart...very affordable and they haven't upset my stomach at all! They've been wonderful! My doctor said its a good idea to take extra folic acid if you have M/S and are not eating alot and getting the proper nutrients you need. But my doctor also has me taking an extra Iron Pill wtih my Prenatals so I'm just sticking with my Prenatals and the extra Iron. I'm not a big pill person, so the less the better for me! But definitely consult your doctor because you may need more or less vitamins than someone else. But in anycase taking Prenatals before or while TTC is a great idea, your body can always use the extra vitamins! My best friend isn't planning on TTC until next year and shes already taking Prenatals. Good Luck!

I take a prescription prenatal, because apparently all the over-the-counter pills do not have enough folic acid.  I also take a calcium pill and vitamin C.

In canada they are now reccomending taking a prenatal vitamin with 5mg of folic acid, but i think you can only get them prescription. i take a regular prenantal (1mg folica acid) and then usually 2 more 1mg of folic...when i can swallow them

Over the counter prenatals have good folic acid HOWEVER my OBGYN prescribed 1mg extra folic acid supplament for me also. If you have a hard time taking the vitamins (like if they make your morning sickness worse) then try taking them before bed or try gummie vitamins.

With my first pregnancy I started taking the Walgreens brand pre-natals.  Since I had most of that bottle leftover after the miscarriage, I finished it off when I found out I was pregnant again.  Now I think I'm using the Walmart brand ones.  I also find it helps to take them at night to avoid nausea and icky feelings.  =D  But even if that doesn't work for you, go with Laura's plan and take Flintstones!  =D
