Hip/thigh/pelvic pain

Last night I started getting these pains in my inner thigh/vaginal/pelvic area. It feels really sore, almost like I worked out really hard and the pain you would feel the next day from doing something like that. (only I didn't do anything) It's weird. When I am laying down or sitting it's fine, but once I stand up to walk, it's feel so sore. Does this sound normal? Also my lower belly was sore as well last night but not today. Is it just stretching? Or what would cause these pains, especially in the inner thigh/vaginal/pelvic area. (I don't know how else to describe it) Thanks!!

OMG!! tabby you just nailed it!  That is exactly how it feels for me, too, only there hasn't been that much happening in the sex department lately....
I was starting to wonder if I had an infection of some type, but now I'm pretty sure its what everyone else is describing.
Don't remember this from my previous three pregnancies, either!

Tabitha...it's funny you say that about sex....I thought that is what caused it, but I know it wasn't from that! (at least I don't think we were that rough anyway...lol) But I know what you are saying. I've had some back aches as well...it seems to come and go. Yes...the joys of pregnancy!

I must go figure out what is for dinner....I just don't feel like cooking though. lol. My poor hubby!!!

I have been having the same pains:( Sometimes it literally feels like I had very rough sex for 5 hours straight, lol! Thats about the best as I can desribe it:( And my thighs and back start aching, makes me think preterm labor, but it was the same with my 3rd too so im not too worried. Ahhhh the joys of pregnancy:)

It is pretty annoying and if it's anything like it was with my son...in the third trimester I won't be able to walk! lol. I had really bad sciatic pain up until last week, and now that is gone and this has appeared. Just when I thought I was pain free! haha. =)

debgunn- I am 14w 1d...so I guess it can start at anytime! I heard it can start happening as soon as the 1st trimester is over, so I guess it's normal. I just don't remember this pain with my son.

Mumita...so I guess it's kinda pointless to even mention it to my midwife...since there is nothing she can do about it. Oh well!! It's all worth it in the end, that's what I keep telling myself. =)

Joy...I had AWFUL sciatic nerve pain with Jeremiah....It was so bad I couldn't even stand for too long to wash dishes. I would walk with a limp or scream if I had to walk a lot. And it only got worse towards the end because of all the pressure. Annoying stuff!

Asking4aMiracle....I didn't know what you were talking about until I read further! I'm like...what is coccyx?? lol. I don't have that pain....not yet anyway!! =)
It's funny how it's called "relaxin" but there is nothing "relaxin" about these pains! =)

lol, yea, the only thing that should be relaxin is the mommy, not her bones and ligaments!!

its basically the little bone that is at the base of your tail bone....ever fell flat on your butt and your tailbone hurts, well its because you sprained your coccyx bone!! and instead of it barely curving in at your pelvis, with all the pressure, its like pointing forward almost and its holding all the weight and SORE!! at least mine is!!

Oh, and btw, you can thank the hormone relaxin for all those aches and pains in your lower back, hips, thighs, and butt =)

Yep I guess all these aches and pains are pretty normal,,, 0but for some reason this pubic pain doesn't hit everyone. I never had it with my last 3 children.

Joy, maybe you wont get it!

Chantal, I agree with Ania also, the abdomen pain is prolly just the ligaments stretching (that's pretty common) but maybe it's all worth a mention to your midwife anyway.

Debgun, it appears that it has stricken us around the 2nd trimester.

Mumita, great info on this thread, ~~~ Thanks ladies!

I asked my midwife eventhough I had done my own research and nope there isn't anything that you can do about it. They'll tell you to buy a pelvic support belt, I haven't yet because I don't expect it to do anything specially when I'm sleeping and I turn.  Unfortunately if I could sleep on my back it wouldn't hurt as much but supossedly we can't so I try not to.  Definitely use a pillow in between your legs, it won't make it "heal" BUT it'll hurt less when you get up to pee 500 times at night.

I don't know if I've gotten used to it or it hurts a little less but hang in there.

Yeah ive had that for a month or 2 now. It feels like you just gave birth or had surgery. It was only when getting up from sitting or sleeping, now its ALL THE TIME ugh... I need a cane lol But its becasue the baby dropped and now hes +1 ready to come out. So thats why its all the time. How many weeks are you?? Mine was sore vaginally, groin, pelvix and thighs area.

I've had similar pain during my 2nd trimester - all my bones (hip and pubic) were in awful pain. The nurse on call told me that it's because your hips are opening, and pubic bone spreading (it should go back to normal after labor). I had issues walking it was so bad.
For me it went away after about 2 weeks, but I still get the sore pubic bone when I get up at night (I am in my 3rd trimester).
In the belly (on the bottom) - are ligaments that are streaching and pulling.
There is no cure for most of the pregnancy pains, so we just have to deal with it.

Hi Chantal21,  I just want to say I'm feeling the same pains.  It's like a pubic area pain and it makes sense that they called it "Symphysis Pubis Diastasis" or whatever.  My pubic bone and inner thighs hurts like heck, especially when crossing my legs or rolling over in bed.  I slept with a pillow between my legs the last two nights and it helped a little.

See ya on the September babies forum!

I looked it up and it kinda does sound like what I am going through at times. I know when I gave birth to my son, my pelvis has never been the same. It would almost seperate itself (or so it felt like it) at times and was very painful. I was assuming that was from giving birth and everything seperating and making room for him to come out. I still experience that pain once in a while, but this is just a constant sore feeling. Is this something I should tell my midwife about or is there nothing they can do about it?
I was sleeping with a pillow between my legs, and that feel so good, but the last few nights I haven't been for some reason. I will do that again from now on. I guess holding my son doesn't help either...he is 27 pounds and I'm sure that puts a lot of strain on things, especially in that area. I wish he would just start walking soon! hehe Thank you so much Mumita for that all info!! I really appreciate it! =)

Typical advice usually given to women includes avoiding strenuous exercise, prolonged standing, vacuum cleaning, stretching exercises and squatting. Women are also frequently advised to:

Brace the pelvic floor muscles before performing any activity which might cause pain
Rest the pelvis
Sit down for tasks where possible (eg preparing food, ironing, dressing)
Avoid lifting and carrying.
Avoid stepping over things.
Avoid straddle movements especially when weight bearing.
Bend the knees and keep the legs 'glued together' when turning in bed and getting in and out of bed.
Place a pillow between the legs when in bed or resting.
Avoid twisting movements of the body.

I've ben having that same pain for more than 6 weeks now.  Its the beautiful hormone relaxin (what makes your muscles, tendons, ligaments stretch during pregnancy), it eases up a bit but not entirely.  you have to learn to not cross your legs when sitting and to make sure that your hips are aligned when sleeping on the side.
Also when sleeping put a pillow in between your legs, it helps to keep the hips aligned.

Somestimes my pubic bone shifts and pops because it is literally loose because of the pregnancy hormones.  Apparently it eases up after the baby is born.
Its called Symphysis Pubis Diastasis.  Look it up and see if that sounds like what you are feeling.
