House mice?

Another question on pet droppings has me wondering: I live in the country and we have a perpetual problem with house mice around here. We caught about a dozen in our last round of trapping (yuck, I know) and I just heard squeaking again so it wouldn't surprise me to discover that despite our best efforts, we've got another litter. The cold weather always sends them looking for shelter this time of year.

Other than hantavirus and general irrititation, should I be concerned? Do I need to go to the extremes of not sweeping up droppings or  not emptying traps myself?
