Normally they say to wait 14 days after ovulation to test for the most accurate results. As for the pains you were having it could also have been ovulation pains esp if it was on one side. I would say if you use an early results test you can probably test 10 days after ovulation. Use your first morning urine for the best results. The month I got my BFP I used a 6 day sooner test and it came up negative. Two days later (4 days before my missed period) I tested again and got my very fain BFP. I would say that if your test comes up negative to wait like 2-3 days and test again. If it's more than a week after you think you ovulated call your doctor and tell them that you think you might be pregnant and would like to see if they could do a blood test for you. Good luck and I hope you get your BFP soon.
I would wait until your 10 days past ovulation, and even then you may not get a positive right away especially if your cycle is longer than 28 days, but don't give up hope, just re-test in 2 days. My cycles use to be 32-34 days and I tested 4 days early with a First Response and got my BFP, I was 13 days past ovulation. Also make sure that you are using a early detection test, such as a First Response, I believe that they can tell you up to 6 days before you suspect your period, and always use first morning urine. xXxXxX Fingers Crossed that you get that BFP XxXxXx
I've heard of people getting positive results as early as 9-11 DPO but it really just depends on how fast your body will produce the HCG.
