Wow! Great advise. I like the idea of keeping the 'virgin gut'. That makes sense to me. I don't like to take anything myself. I took Tums for the first time in my life last night. I felt slightly defeated. HA! I do take my prenatal still along with probiotics and fish oil (no-mercury of course).
So I will just stick with gripe water and tylenol.
babies do not need a multivitamin when breasfeeding. You should just continue your prenatals and breastmilk has ALL baby needs.
Neonatal units with premature babies do not even give BF babies a multivitamin, only formula fed babies.
But babies up to 6 months have enough reserves in vitamin D, K, and many others from mama when in utero. Some studies show up to a year or longer.
The only thing I have used with all 4 of mine that I have breastfed is tylenol on hand when fevers over 100.3 arise after being told by the pediatrician what ammount to give. You can also have grip water on hand too.
But the more things you have on hand th emore you usually freely give baby studies show when not needed. Babies should keep a virgin gut they call it as long as possible, best till 6-8 months when teh digestive tract is still developing. Giving things before can effect that. Of course when you need to you need to, no one wants to make baby suffer by any means! But the grip water and fever meds are really all you need to have on hand.
Oh and as long as you are eating a good balanced diet then you will not lack in anything either!
Oh you should also have on hand corn starch, and mylanta liqiud, you mix it with a zinc based diaper cream when BAD raashes happen like a paste and it will go away asap! Both my boys got bad rashes from things I ate till I figures out what it was the rash came in one poo everytime! I put that on, the mylanta nutrilizes the acid in the poo! It was wonderful!
Our pediatrician gave us a prescription for Jaxson for a multivitamin as I was unable to breastfeed. That is always an option too in terms of a great multivitamin.. I would ask your ped. next time you are there. It may be less expensive too if you have good prescrition coverage through your health insurance provider.
vitamin D drops, gripe water, tempra, since you are breastfeeding take a prenatal vitamin still, and calcium, because baby will take all the nutrients from you. Plus make sure you stay hydrated. I found myself constantly thirsty lol. Oh and iron supplements are good too :)
