Just a quick question about food

I had heard at the begining of my pregnancy that I couldn't eat any kind of deli meat....I can understand why because of the dieseses that can live on them and all.  My question is this...is it as big of a deal as I was told because there is nothing that I crave more than Subway!!!  LOL!!  I have not had any since I have been preggo but would love to be able to have a sandwich!!  I meant to call my OB this past week but didn't have time!!!  Thanks in advance!!!

I hate Subway. Jimmy John's all the way!

Anyway, I eat deli sandwiches at home. It's the only way I can get protein some days because it's one of the only meats I can eat.

The risk of actually getting a bacterial infection is less than 1%.

It is also a good idea to stay away from deli meats because the vast majority of them contain sodium nitrates. The only kind I could find that did not were the Hormel Natural brand - just look at the ingredients when you purchase lunch meats.

And as others have said, all things in moderation. :)

It is possible to get listeria from lunchmeat that is not kept at controlled temperatures, that is why they say buy your own. I however eat subway whenever I crave it. No ill side effects with this pregnancy or my last, but doesnt mean it can't happen.

i avoid places like subway while pregnant because it is quite possible to get listeria there. I have gotten mild food poisoning plenty of times from places like that. (makes you wonder why i still eat at them, doesn't it?) You just never know how long the cold cuts were left out. If you're craving cold cuts, i would buy them and make your own sub. ideally, you should heat them first, but my OB said to use common sense in handling and just make sure they look/smell OK. Buy small portions so they're not in your fridge more than a day or 2.

I posted a question about this awhile ago.  I was told that you can have toasted subs from Subway or Quizno's.  Actually, a few people told me that they never heard that and were eating cold cuts.  I had a food aversion to deli meats for awhile, so I didn't have to worry that much.  But I do have a sub or cold cuts every now and then.  I also have tuna fish every now and then, just try to avoid eating it every day!

I was told that it was fine in moderation, as long as you're not eating it every day. Also, you can get it toasted or a warm sub, and it should kill the bacteria. My OB told me deli meats were fine as long as they were cooked for a few seconds to kill off harmful bacteria. But one sub is not going to harm you, my friend worked at subway when she was pregnant and she ate subs almost everyday, and her son is completely fine. Same goes for fish, and tuna, and stuff along those lines, once in a while is fine, but not everyday.

The only thing I could get down for weeks were subs!  I went to my Dr. for my first appointment and she told me no more.  She said I can buy the packaged deli meat like the Oscar Meyer or healthy choice and make my own subs at home.  It's just not the same, but I don't want to risk it.  If the deli meat is contaminated with Listeria it can invade the placenta and cause miscarriage.  If you buy actual fresh sliced deli meat you can eat it after you heat it to steaming.
