Miscarriage Timing

I found out yesteday that I have twins and neither have a heartbeat (I submitted a posting yesterday but only got 1 response).  They wanted me to have a D&C but I chose to have Hcg levels drawn 48 hours apart before going forward with the D&C.  My question is...Does anyone know how long it takes to miscarry after embryo vitality ends (it is/was twins)?  It seems like I'm just sitting around the house waiting to bleed.  And every second that goes by that I don't experience cramping/bleeding, it gives me hope that they were wrong about the ultrsound.  I'm sure everyone is different but if anyone knows about how long (1 week, 2 days, 2 weeks.....anything)...I'd appreciate the info.  Thanks!

Hi There....thanks so much for the reply (your info. is great...you were the only one that replied to my last posting!  Thanks)....I live in upstate NY.....my OB office does not have the most updated equipment, as I know that whenever anyone has problems, they send them to Fletcher Allen in VT or to Albany......And furthermore, an actual DOCTOR never even saw me.....I had a midwife (who I essentially feel is as talanted as a MD in most cases) and an ultrasound tech.  It just seems like they spent only a total of maybe 5 minutes looking for the heartbeats and then told me to have the D&C......Thanks again for your GREAT advice.....

I've heard of women who've had the same thing happen to them, where the doc told them that there wasn't a heartbeat when there should have been. If you still have pregnancy symptoms, you need to hold on to faith that something is going okay.

A lot of information from ultrasounds depends greatly on the doctor's expertise, experience, and availability in equipment to see the babies and what is going on. Sounds to me like THEY messed up somewhere.

oh...forgot to add another thing... my levels were not doubling - they were actually DECREASING.  I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that too.  luvmy2girls is right about keeping the faith with any rise in levels!  Good luck!

You're welcome, it's difficult with your first pregnancy even when there isn't a scare of issues.   I hope everything turns out ok.  Keep us updated and GOOD LUCK! (Like mamafessler said, even if your numbers don't double but are rising....keep faith)

Yes, it was a transvagianl U/S.  This is my first pregnancy, so I don't even know what to expect if I start to miscarry...I'm an RN on an orthopedics floor and it seems like just b/c I'm a nurse they assume I know everything...and I know NOTHING about OB issues.....SO I feel lost and like I'm not getting answers......Thanks for making me feel better about waiting it out....I'm having my 48 hour Quant Hcg tomorrow......If the levels rise I plan on getting another U/S tomorrow to see what's going on.  If the levels drop, I'll take it from there...Thanks again!

When i was preggo with my twins i got an u/s at around 8 weeks and they didnt even see anything in the sac except the yolk thing.  My hcg lvls were at 18,000 at that point....and they only went up about 3,000 every 24 hours.  But then 2 weeks later they did another u/s and thats when I actually found out that it was twins.  So at this point anything is possible, you may be dated wrong if you ovulate late in your cycle.  Good Luck and have faith.

I am 8 wks also.  I'm assuming they did transvaginal u/s?  Do you have other children?  I had a D&C done in May and I still to this day feel like I just took the docs word for it and wish I had waited longer to find out for sure.  I also still had symptoms and no bleeding or cramping going on.  Those little ones can be tricky to find too.  Are getting another test tomorrow?

(sept.2007) I had my 1st u/s at 6week everything was ok and we heared the heart beat. then had to go back at 10w, we had m/s. I had no idea at all. the baby die at 6-7w so for 3-4week I was thinking everything was fine.ANd had no bleeding. I did end up having a D&C because I had already gone over 3weeks and it didnt start to pass on its own. And I just wanted to get it over with. It was heartbreaking. But its different with everyone is could be 2week or 5weeks.

So sorry for your loss.I would get one more u/s if you do get a d&c just to make sure!!

Oh yea. Iam now 5w4d pregnant again. I hope for the best for you!!!

thanks for the encouragement.  i'm still having pregnancy symptoms.  i should be about 8 weeks, 5 days along.  My Quant hcg yesterday was 13,000, which they said was high, so i'll see what it is tomorrow and go from there.  But they also said that at that level, they should have seen heartbeats.

Hi.  When I went to my doc, I was supposed to be 9 1/2 weeks pregnant.  He told me the fetus was only measuring 6 or 7 weeks and that I probablly don't have a viable pregnancy.  I was not bleeding/cramping/anything the entire time (this means, it had beenover 2 weeks since the fetus stopped growing and I was not witnessing any bleeding and what have you.)  My doctor gave me a pill called Mistoprol to help induce the labor.  Shortly after I took the pill, a lot came out of me.  Most of it came out in the first week, but I was having light bleeding for a month.  I finally had to get a D&C 'cause there was tissue still in there.  It's been 2 weeks since the D&C and I am patiently (well, not really) awaiting my period.  Hope this was somewhat helpful :)

Do you have pregnancy symptoms still?  I think I would do exactly what you are, wait a couple days and have blood drawn to double check.   Don't go ahead with a D&C til you are positive.  I hope everything turns out ok.   I have heard of so many misdiagnosed m/c so I would wait it out a couple of days.  How far along should you be?

I have been preggo twice and neither one I got an u/s with so I really have no idea. Both ended up in m/c. My prayers are with you and I hope everything goes ok! I hope they are wrong about the u/s. Keep us updated!
