Sex is more for helping the cervix soften and dilate.
I also want to add that your doctor can't FORCE you into an induction. You don't want to? You have until 42 weeks, sometimes 43 weeks. Forcing your body into labor when it is not ready and then laboring for 36 hours is really hard on you and it is hard on baby. If you feel induction is the way to go then I'd think about it more toward 40-41 weeks and give your body time. In the past you haven't given your body time to see if it will go into labor on its own.
I used evening primrose oil starting at almost 38w. The difference is that I rubbed it on my lower belly. I broke open one capsule at night and rubbed it on. Within fifteen min of rubbing it on I was having contractions. The day I turned 38w (3 days after I began rubbing EPO on) I went into labor and my water broke early that next morning. Idk if there's any real connection here, but before I started rubbing it on, I wasn't having any strong contractions.
He is inducing me at 39 weeks because to be honest I asked him to because unless I have my mom take off work I wont have anyone to keep my son while I am in labor! I am hopeing he comes sooner though!
Why does the doctor want to induce this time around? I would express your desire to go into labor on your own, as long as that does not put you or your baby at risk.
If you do have to end up inducing, try not to worry about your last labor as far as length. Your chances of that happening again, should be low. Last time was your body's first time to labor and deliver a baby. This time around, your body will "know what to do" so to speak, so it will probably go much smoother this time around.
As for ways to induce on your own....everyone makes good points. It probably won't happen until the little one is ready on its own.
With my last pregnancy I had preterm labor at 32 weeks and when I hit 36 weeks I got off bed rest and pretty much tried everything to start labor. I drank red raspberry leaf tea, inserted evening primrose oil into my whoo-ha twice a day, had sex every day as well, walked for about 1-3 miles a day, ate a pineapple in one sitting, ate the hottest Indian food I could find... I ended up getting a membrane sweep at 39 weeks (where I was dilated 3 cm and 90% effaced) and went into labor 36 hours later. Baby will come when he is ready, you can try to get him to come out sooner but he's not going to come if he doesn't want to. It stinks.
hey Lindsey!!! My goodness how time flies!! 36 weeks already?!?! I wanted to add that just sex wont do much as far as helping bring on labor. You need to have an orgasim so that your uterus contracts, so have hubby work on that:)lol:) I have heard everything you have, sex, walking, pinapple, spicy food, I used evening primrose oil with my second DS. My midwife suggested it. Also stripping of your cervix might work IF your body is ready. Also I have had woman tell me about black cohash but never tired it cause my last came at 37 weeks. It sounds scary though so I would probably stay away form it!
Ok don't shoot me but I am an herbie :D Meaning I like how herbs help with induction. Susun Weed has a great book out called the Wise Woman Herbal, the Childbearing Years which I use for each pregnancy. My first labor I did the herbs, using Squaw Vine for my last 3-4 weeks as a tea. My labor was quick. My water broke at 8, I delivered at 1. This was at 38 weeks. My 2nd one I got lazy and didn't do the Squaw Vine or Raspberry Leaf tea and I was laboring for about 21 hours. This time I plan on doing the Squaw Vine again to compare.
Also want to mention some people use Black Cohosh, that makes me throw up in literally a half hour, I had no luck with that one personally at all. To help soften the cervix close to time for my first one I also used Evening Primrose just as a vitamin supplement. I think this helped too. Again you would not want to use these until later on in pregnancy because they are natural forms of induction. Hope this helps.
why do I remember things after I've hit post comment, lol
I also took raspberry leaf tablets from 36 weeks with my 2nd baby and from 30 weeks with my 3rd baby...they never worked either lol, my body is very stubborn when it comes to labour I think.
Also with regard to the nipple stimulation I've heard it can work, but isn't instant and You/partner will probably get bored before it starts labour.
*oops that was meant to say 8lb 15ozs!
Hi,
there are lots of different things you can try to induce labour but to be perfectly honest if that baby isn't ready to come out then nothing is gonna work!
Some things are: eating pineapple, stair climbing, hot bath, sex, long walk, hot curry...there may be more...I tried all of these at term with my 3 children and none of them worked! I had membrane sweeps when I was at my due date with all 3, it never worked once! I ended up being induced with all 3 when I was past my due date. I will however say, if you can get mobile once in labour if you end up being induced, ask for a birthing ball, I managed sat on one of them with just gas and air with both my boys and went from 3cm to 10cm within an hour of getting on the ball, my 2 boys were not small babies either *lb 15ozs and 9lbs. Staying mobile definitely helps!
Good luck :D
