No fetal pole/no yolk sac at 6 and a half weeks? How much should we worry?

After 2 years of trying to conceive, my wife and I were finally able to conceive a child on September 12 through IUI (my low sperm count is the reason we had to use that means).  However, on the first ultrasound, yesterday, October 13, it only showed the gestational sac and yolk sac but no visible embryo or fetal pole and obviously no heartbeat.  The measurments came out to be 5 weeks exactly but her LMP was on August 28, about 6 and a half weeks ago.  They said it should have measured 6 weeks and 3 days and that we were off by 1 week and 3 days.  They said plus or minus a week is within the normal range but we were 3 days past that.  She has another ultrasound in 2 weeks and we are very nervous and are on pins and needles.  Does anyone have any success stories on this type of early ultrasound situaton or does anyone have any advice.  We know its early and understand that the ultrasound may not be completely accurate but everything we've read seem to indicate that the only times that the early ultrasounds are not accurate is when you don't remember the LMP, are wrong about conception date, or the periods are not regular.  But we remember the LMP, know the conception date, and her periods are regular, except that on her last period, she ovulated 15 days after LMP (not the usual 14 days).

I went for a ultrasound 2 weeks ago when going by my lmp I should of been 7 weeks, on the scan it said that I was only 5 weeks or so as they could only see a gestational sac and nothing else. I went back 11 days later and they found on the ultrasound a yolk sac, fetal pole and we even saw the heartbeart and amniotic sac too which really amazed us. But according to the fetal pole size I am only 5 weeks gone now. My lmp was 16th Aug so that makes me 8 weeks and 4 days. We have to go back again in 2 weeks time to confirm viability, I am not worried because I saw my babys heartbeat. Talk about confusing. Anyway I wouldnt worry just yet because the ultrasounds are never spot on, just have to grin and bear the next couple of weeks and fingers crossed on your next ultrasound you will see your baby. And even if you dont I would demand another one a few weeks later. It is you and your wifes pregnancy and if your not happy you can get a second opinion.

I just wanted to tell you that I was unable to see my baby until we were 8.5 weeks by lmp....I had multiple ultrasounds and had the dr.s baffled. They were suggesting blighted ovum (again, I had suffered from one four months earlier) and were prepared to schedule a D&C. We finally seen her at 8.5 weeks gestation and then they bumped me up to 9 weeks...She is an 8 months old, happy and healthy little munchkin now :)
Early ultrasounds are so POINTLESS! All it does is scare and worry the hell outta people. Everyone and every baby is different and develops at a different pace. Try not to worry unless you have cause for worry...IE..bleeding, severe cramping, etc Even the cramping can be quite normal....Wishing you both the very best!!
If they suggest anything crazy like a D&C before 8 or even 9 weeks, I would highly recommend a second opinion.

Hi I am in the same position as you are, I went for my scan yesterday 15th. I was going from my LMP so I would have been 6w 4d, but noooo scan said I was 5w 2d. There was only a round dark blob on the screen. I am not worried one bit, because I know that you can be 1 -2 week either side of your expected date. I must have ovulated later then I thought And seeing your post has made me feel more comfortable as you seen the exact same thing in your scan that I did, just looked like a round blob. I love my blob and can't wait to see another scan in 2 weeks :-) Congrats on your bump :-)

Ps.. I was due on the 6th June 2011, but not that has changed to 15th of June

Do you know the exact date the egg implanted? If not, it's very possible that the egg could have just implanted later than you thought, making you later than you think you are. I've always been told (and read) it's possible to be up to 2 weeks off in either direction. Other things that can affect the ultrasound are the type done (I assume it was vaginal?) and the quality of the machines. At this point only time will tell.
