This is a reply to one of the stories on MedHelp, where the waters broke at 18 weeks!!!
"This is a much feared complication of pregnancy. It is commonly known as "PPROM"-or preterm prolonged rupture of membranes.
Sometimes (uncommonly) if you are kept at complete bedrest the bag of water may "seal over" and the fluid may reaccumulate and the pregnancy progress. I've seen this happen a couple of times.
Unfortunately, the more common scenario is either infection sets in (as evidenced by increased temp, abd tenderness, foul discharge, or changes in your white count), preterm labor ensues, or the pregnancy continues, with you continuing to leak all the while.
The problem with leaking amniotic fluid constantly, is that without normal levels of fluid accumulating, the fetal lungs are at risk for not developing. Sometimes the baby's limbs get into abnormal positions and develop abnormally.
There is no way to tell what may happen with you. Sounds like you are being treated exactly appropriately. Complete bed rest and antibiotics. NOTHING should go in your vagina. Keep your perineal area clean. Change pads frequently if you are using them.
Good luck to you! I remember years and years ago, we had a gal whose water broke at around 19 weeks. She elected to terminate. After 2 days of trying to induce labor (she was checked internally often, bled, every medical intervention you can think of), but she just wouldn't go into labor. She decided this was a sign, and stopped everything and went home against medical advice. She "sealed over" as I mentioned above, and delivered at 34 weeks. "
I dont know if this would work but my midwife was just talking about a woman whose water broke but she ahsn't gone in labor. She said that when she worked at the hospital and that would happen really early on in pregnancy they would lie the patient down and move the bed so that he head was lower than her feet to keep any fluids she still and any that would be made in. I dont know if that would help especially if there is no fluid to begin with. You should definitely seek another opinion. And my vote if you only have those two options is to do nothing, pray, and see what happens. Even if you do miscarry you will feel much better with the choice than the "what if" you would feel if you terminated.
I had a scan today and there woz a bit of fluid surrounding my baby, but last wednesday my consultant scaned me and said there was no fluid and offered me a medical termination which I refused cz my babys still alive and kicking I want to give it a chance of survival, do you know any specialist that I can contacted cz iv only spoke to a consultant at north manchester general hospital, he gave me 2 options and said theres nothing they can do or a termination, I would appriciate it if you could help me out.. Thanks
You should consult a doctor right away. What did they tell you? Did they suggest anything? The amniotic fluid is crucial to the lungs development and without it there's little chance of a healthy pregnancy :-( With that being said, there were cases that babies were born prematurely but survived. Contact specialist immediately and don't get just one opinion please. Do what you have to do to save your precious baby <3
