No heartbeat detected at 5wks 4 days

I went to the ER on Wed. and they did a transvaginal ultrasound on me. They located the fetal pole and the sac. All of that was normal but they did not detect a heartbeat. My HCG levels were 39,000  that is what the doctor told me. They told me that my baby had died. But before doing a D & C they wanted me to do bloodwork again on Friday and a second ultrasound. They doctor I saw did not do an ultrasound and said he only wanted me to do bloodwork and if the HCG levels go up then he would follow up with U/S. Now I have to wait till Tuesday till I have an answer. I am going out of my mine with worry and sadness. Is this something that normally happens or should they have seen my babys heartbeat and I should prepare for the worst? And if the HCG levels did not go up much but a little should I have him follow up with an ultrasound before he wants to do a D & C?

Thank you for your quick answers. I think the same. I have no bleeding no cramping nothing. And I saw my baby and the sac. I think even if the levels seem to go down a little I will insist on an ultrasound. I saw alot of the posts here that mentioned that they had ups and downs in their hormone levels. So I will try to be hopeful.

I remember with my second child the dr wouldnt even see me untill i was 8 weeks b/c the u/s wouldnt have been accurate. DONT just take the first word on it! especially if your HCG levels go up!!!! every person and every pregnancy is different. hopefully it isnt a m/c but if it is under certain circumstances yes they might want to do a d&c.. best of luck to you!!!

At 5w4d my levels were 32000 and they didn't detect a heartbeat. At 6w1 days my levels doubled and they saw a heartbeat on the ultrasound. Usually 5w4d is too early most people first see the heartbeat sometime between 6-8weeks. I hope this puts you a little at ease. Make sure you get a repeat ultrasound before they do a D & C.
