OT: How long would you let a 3 week old go without poo'ing before calling a Doc?

Well the Title says it all. Abby has gone sense Tuesday without so much as a smear on her Diaper.(her tuesday dirty diaper was VERY overflowed). She had her first Ped, app yesterday and I brought it up to her, but she said she will take a look at Abby at her next app, which is next wedneday, if she hasnt gone before the the weekend is over. Its now been 4 days. The nurses at the hopsital said said a newborn shouldnt go more than two days without poo'ing and if they did go longer than that, then they said to call a doc asap.

Whats weird is she had about 1-2 stools a day when she was in the hospital. Am I doing something wrong? I prepare her BM/formula EXACTLY as the nurses taught me too. 65 ML Breast milk and a half teaspoon of powdered formula in the BM, and I also wrist test it, its never too warm or too cold...

I'm really getting worried.

She Finally poo'ed, my cusin gave her a half a teaspoon of Karo syrup last night and 4 hours later she had a massive movement, she seem soo happy and content afterwards. But she was awake for those 4 hours, I think my cusin gave her a sugar rush lol

anyway thanks for the advice ladies, I will deff be using them.

They also make and sell thermometer's that have a marker on it so you don't put it in too far. It's a flexible one and makes it really easy to use. You just need to make sure you use a thermometer cover (for sanitary reasons--though you should always use one anyways regardless of where the temperature is taken) and I have always put a small amount of Astroglide on the end to reduce friction so it doesn't hurt her.

I've never taken a rectal temperature before either, but the nurse demonstrated that it only goes in a little - just a hair past the metal tip. About 1/2 inch total it looked like.

Even though I have a 4 year old I have never taken the temp in their bum. How far should the thermometer go in? Right now we are trying the tummy massage, to see if that helps. Shes eating about every 3-4 hours, but if she wakes up sooner than that she eats. NO Feeding Scedule, shes on demand.

My little one hasn't arrived yet, but I thought I would chime in with what I have experienced so far. My niece didn't poo for 7 days and when brought in to the dr, he said that she wasn't producing any waste and needed to be fed more often to produce waste. Mom started supplementing with formula and a few days later she had an explosive diaper and has been fine since then.

Next, the pediatrician I met in a labor prep class said that most times stimulating the area can produce a bowel movement. He recommended taking the baby's temperature in the rectum using a themometer WITHOUT mercury or glass (in other words, a digital themometer). The stimulation often produces a poopy diaper. Hope that helps! :)

When Harry was 3 weeks old he didn't poo for 2 days, I rang my Midwife and she told me to give him a tiny tiny amount of pure orange juice off a spoon or syringe and it worked. So everytime he goes for more than 3 days without a poo I give him pure orange juice only a tiny amount :) x

A SMALL amount of apple juice isn't going to her hurt.  The Karo syrup should be fine.  My oldest was technically a preemie due to size/development even though she was full term and her ped recommended it for her.  Just make sure it's the DARK.  The glycerin suppositories are medication free and safe to use.  The pediatric ones are much smaller than the adult counterparts but I still cut them in half.

Wouldnt the Apple juice hurt her? I remember using Karo syrup with my older daughter, but im afriad to with this one because of her being a preemie. I think shes getting more breast milk now that shes out of the hospital, I think the nurses used more of the ready to use formula than my BM. DH said he was going to call the Doc in the morning, see if she wants us to come in. But like I said in the post, when I mentioned it to the Doc wednesday she didnt seem to concerned, but she did say if Abby hasnt gone by the end of the weekend to give her a call.

If it's been since Tuesday you need to do something to relieve her.  You can try a SMALL (like 1 ounce) of apple juice.  You could use HALF of a pediatric glycerin suppository.  Both of those usually work really well and produce results within a few hours.

If that doesn't work I'd callt he ped.  At 3 weeks I would NOT recommend prune juice. Many breastfed babies NORMALLY don't go but every few days but 4-5 days might require some initial help.

When Lily was 3 weeks old she went 11 days without pooing. The doctor said its because her body was using all of the nutients in the breast milk and had no need to poo. Doesnt hurt to ask the doctor maybe 1ml of prune juice daily might help

No her belly isnt hard and shes eating really good and having a good amount of wet diapers. it worries me because my older daughter had, had very bad problems havin a bowel movement, even at a month old (shes now 4 years old and still has the problem) she would have to strain very hard to have a movement, and it was always so HUGE hard and dry. I'm just hoping because she overflowed her diaper tuesday night, that she hasnt made enough to poo again. She is a preemie, so I'm OVER Worried.
