OT~sudden pea allergy???

Some of you may have read my post where I took DS to the clinic because he broke out in hives and started having trouble breathing. Well, I'm afraid I was wrong. It seems he is having a reaction to peas. I fed them to him again today after a couple weeks and he broke out again, but doesn't seem to be having any kind of breathing problems. So my question is, why now after 10 odd months of feeding them to him is he having this kind of reaction? Can children suddenly become allergic to something they've had multiple times? I mean, I can't count on both hands and feet the number of times I've fed them to him. It's all he used to want to eat besides bananas...why is it all of a sudden a problem?

It's normal to suddenly get allergic reactions to stuff you've eaten all of your life. Even with liquids i.e lactose intolerance.
I had a friend that LOVED lobster, but then one day when he was 23 he almost died after having a lobster tail. He found out he suddenly became allergic.

he only need see a dr for allergies...if appointments are hard to come by, 2 weeks isn't so long to wait.

That may be a good idea, he's had a bad diaper rash lately too, as you may have seen from another post. But it was before the pea thing. I think I'm going to wait until his one year appointment. He turns one in just over two weeks, so I think I'll wait, just because it's hard to get an appointment to see the pediatrician. I already have to take him in for his shots, so it may be easier just to wait until he gets his shots...or do you think I should take him sooner given that he still has a diaper rash and this is day four...

i think a visit to the dr may be in order, especially as there were breathing problems last time. they can run tests to find out exactly what the allergy is and provide treatment if a reactioon occurs. just saying, as he is still so young. am planning to consult my dr over my 2 1/2 year old even though there have been no breathing problems.

Wow...I had no clue. I mean, he's eaten them all his life, and now all of a sudden he just breaks out in hives. Thankfully he didn't have problems breathing this time, that was scary last time. Oh well, I guess no peas for a while. I was reading up online about sudden food allergies and some sites said it's ok to try again after they're one, but I think I'll wait a few months before I give it another go.

yep, anyone can suddenly develop an allergy to anything. my son's recently developed a skin allergy to either bleach ( and i mean slight remnants of mixed with water used to clean and dried before he touches it ) or air freshener. he just gets lumps on his skin which go down after a few hours and leave red spots which hang around for a day or two. i'm using hayfever tablets since he's 2 and a half.
