Paragard IUD opinions-OT

I posted this in the BC forum, but it seems kinda...dead, so I decided to repost it here. Have any of you ladies ever tried the Paragard? I don't want anything hormonal, and I'm horrible at taking pills so this seems to be the best option. A few people I've talked to have told me that it causes all kinds of weird things to happen, such as weight gain, mood swings and odd things, but I'm unsure how this could happen unless it's their bodies reaction to the copper. How has it worked for anyone else? I'm set to get it in a month or two (I'm waiting on a callback for when my appointment will be) and just wondered if anyone suggested it or not.

I also know it can/will cause heavy, more frequent bleeding, but I've had that my entire life so I don't care.

I had the Paragard for 1 year and gained over 20lbs because of it! It made my periods a ton heavier then normal! I had it removed over a year ago and have been unable to get pregnant. We already have 2 kids and I got pregnant with them on the first try....and now I am not able to...I am wondering if the Paragard did something to make me unable to get pregnant.

I had a Paragard for 2 years and I thought it was the best BC option for me out there.  It took a while to get used to it, the heavier periods were nothing that some Advil couldn't take care of.  It does not cause weight gain or hormonal side effects because it has no hormones so wherever you read that its wrong. go to the Paragard website its paragard . com you will find the best info out there.  alexia is right though, since the paragard changes the ph levels in your uterus and makes it more acidic (that's how it kills sperm and doesnt allow implantation) then you are more succeptible to getting bacterial vaginosis (bv), which is just as common as getting a yeast infection even if you don't have the iud.  However to get rid of bv you have to get antibiotics.

I would go back to using a Paragard when I'm done having kids, if I don't get my tubes tied.

i just got rid of paraguard. i had no real side effects. SUPER heavy periods though that lasted like 7 full days my first 2 cycles after getting it - then they were more like 5-7 days with the first two days being REALLY heavy. had it out cause we were talking about getting pregnant. when it came out they tested it (apparently routine) and found out i had a bacterial infection - apparently that is a common side effect which left untreated can cause problems. i had to take a dose of heavy antibiotics for 10 days.

I was thinking of it for myself... I had the mirena for over 5 years and it caused a bunch of nasty side effects.... The copper iud causes heavy bleeding and cramping which I don't think I'm a bug fan of so I'm prob not going to get it..... It can't cause weight gain or anything like that cause it has no hormone in it.... You can give it a try for a few months to see how it is for you and if you don't like it just get it taken out.
