Picky Eaters..... vitamin/mineral supplement?

Hi, So Yes i do know this is the pregnancy forum, But Ive been on here for a while now....

Anyways.... my child is such a bad eater, i mean.... a couple bites of this and a couple bites of that.... I know for sure... She Definatly isnt eating anywhere near the vege/meat requirment daily.... Sooooo, Ive thought this thru and thru.... I bought a complete vitamin/minerals supplement for here...... It also has 90% daily iron intake... and Calcium.... 90% seems like a lot.... But i would be lucky if she IS getting the other 10 percent.... No she never chows on broccoli or red meats like cereal..... So.... Is it ok for her to take this... Again She is AWFUL at eating. Gotta MAKE her eat...... And im tired of doing so... Ive heard and read that sometimes an imbalance in nutrition can cause a picky eater to get even worse..... Will this by any chance improve her appitite?????????

.... Ive read iron deficiency causes lack of appitite... Im not so sure she deficiant.... But I know shes super bad at eating..... ......... and im afraid shes not getting all she needs.

I agree with the others that you should check with the doctor before starting any supplement. My son is extremely picky and wont eat vegetables at all..He is on polyvitamin. My pediatrician is not worried because he is getting the supplement and his weight and growth are fine.

Her weight sounds good and healthy. I have worked with dozens of very finicky eaters and they all grew well and were healthy despite poor diets. I myself was a very finicky eater so I can relate.
Just so you know, while it seems logical that something sold in every store is safe, in many instances it may not be. In this case, it's probably OK, with the side effects being either no added benefit or minor, such as constipation. However, it is very naive and possibly dangerous to think that things in shelves, even when marketed for children, are safe for everyone. DH is a pharmacist and he wouldn't let me give my kids most of what is on the shelves there, as far as supplements. Some because it's a waste. Many vitamins and minerals are water soluble, and only a certain amount can be absorbed at a time. I know vitamin C is like that. It's pointless to take a full day's recommended dose at one time because you pee a lot of it out. Instead, you should take it several times a day. Similarly, I take a calcium supplement. In order to maximize it's benefit, I need to take it 3 times a day instead of in one shot. Of course, you can't do this with a multivitamin as it may lead to overdosing of other minerals.

The point is, if you are that concerned about her being deficient in areas, you should speak to a professional about the best way to get the nutrients into her. And please don't ever assume that something on the shelves is safe for everyone.

Well, girls im not dosing her up with vitamins.... If the recomended dose wasnt considered "Safe" then i doubt they would sell it in every store. Not being rude but logical.
She is 26 lb. and 2 yrs old. She takes a couple bites of something then she doesnt want anymore. Shes not 40 lbs. if she was i dont think id even consider this. I guess Yes She is growing well, on the same curve as shes always grown... But now she is never hungry to scarf down this or that....

My 3.5 year old is the same way... he seems to be getting better lately but he has his on and off days. I feel like he doesn't eat as much as he should either. What I did is started giving him Sponge Bob daily chewable vitamins and he not only loves them because they have him on them but he thinks they're candy and has no problem eating them. Also if you daughter doesn't like the chewy ones, you can always try the gummy vitamins.

I would call your pediatrician. Jaxson isn't a fussy eater, but he HATES milk.. His pediatrician put him on a daily vitamin. I think the pediatrician could prescribe something to make sure your daughter is safely recieving the daily required nutrients. best of luck!

i'd be careful with such supplements. Definitely refer this question to your pediatrician, or maybe a pharmacist. Your pediatrician can do a blood test to see if she even needs the iron. If she doesn't need it, i wouldn't give it as it can cause constipation. Also, a lot of times when supplements have a lot of something, it's a waste since the body cannot absorb it all at once. Again, a pharmacist or the ped can give you more info on which ones are absorbed in which ways.
I know you say she is picky, but many cereals are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Does she eat those?

How old is she and how small is she? Is she growing ok? Some kids simply don't need as much food as others.
