Please help

Hi.. I am new to this type of communication. So bear with me. Anyhow.... I am about 4 weeks pregnant. I am on 240 mgs of oxycodone per day. I take 2 , 30 mg pills 4 times a day. I have weaned down a bit since last week. I am always in pain. I have ruptured discs and bone degenerative disease and arthritis. I am 33 yrs old and other wise healthy. I have had 2 births never had any problems. When I was pregnant before I was not on any meds by the way. Will this cause birth defects this early on. Or would it cause defects later on if I stayed on it? I will tell my OB but I don't have one yet. I have heard of worse situations. I ironically enough was a drug detox counselor. I got peole into detox. I saw it all!! Please help. Give me some references of where I could get some more information. I feel really guilty but the pain is awful. Plus now it would be withdrawl on top of prenancy.

I know this post is 3yrs old but im curious how is ur baby? Im dealing with same situation and freaking out, I have 2 girls whch was not on pain meds then, but am disabled from car accident and need the oxycodone to care for them. My ob wants to switch me to methedone whch wouldnt be problem with my pain dr but after researching, it seems methedone is worse than 30s? My dr and mother suggest terminating considering i am handicapped and have enough on my plate with my girls, my 10yr old has type1 diabetes. Im freaking, i believe conception is a miracle and a gift, how can I terminate, but yet how can I not:(

Id say start with your obgyn.  Ive read on the other forums that some obgyns say its okay as long as its done in moderation and some say absolutly not.  I would then suggest to go to your pain management doctor and discuss what options you have for controlling the pain while youre pregnant.  Im sure they will be able to do something that will be safe for the baby..

My only recommendation would be to get an appointment with your obgyn asap.  When you make the appointment, tell them that you'd like to be seen as soon as possible due to your situation.  BUT congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks so much for all the information. I am tapering but is hard. Where would anyone suggest I look for more information. I wish they made vicodin without the tylenol. I could step down to that but it never helped me much in the past. I think or hope I will get piece of mind once I see my OB. Any input or help is appreciated!

Forgot to add since they dont offer oxycodone down here anymore for oxycotton my brother has been taking actual oxycotton and he says it is alot stronger then his oxycodone.  He only takes one oxycotton a day verses 3 oxycodone.

Oxycodone is a narcotic which is never good in pregnancy but its not as strong as oxycotton.  im very familar with the drug and it belongs in the percocet and darvacet family.  There are people who take it through out pregnancy for various things and as long as the dosage is followed and it is not abused it should not "harm"m the baby.  The baby will however detox after birth.

You deffinitly have to talk to your doctor though.  each pregnancy is different.

My 24 year old brother has degenerative disk disease and has taken oxycodone for years.  His perscription is for oxycotton but always got the "generic" oxycodone bc it was cheaper.  However where we live they no longer offer oxycodone as the "generic" to oxycotton bc there is no true generic for oxycotton.  oxycotton and oxycodone are 2 different narcotics on 2 different levels from 2 different narcotic families.  oxycotton is much stronger then oxycodone.   so when you talk to your doctor make sure he knows youre on oxycodone and not oxycotton!

our pharmacy's down here have been sued over filing oxycotton perscriptions with oxycodone and as a result have been forced inform consumers there is no true generic for oxycotton.

It is always very hard and it's a tough decision to make. Scientists are not allowed to do drug tests on pregnant women so there is no study to show that oxycodone is harmful to an unborn baby. You could try to take the lowest dose possible.

I have heard of women being on strong meds throughout pregnancy and their babies have to go through detox after birth. Speaking with your doctor about this is very important.

My only suggestion is to keep searching for someone who has been in a similar situation. The forum is a little slow today, so be patient.
