Rib pain.....

During the day I think perhaps its my bra causing this discomfort, my upper rib cage, jyst under my breasts, feeling squeezed. But just laying down to sleep at night or napping I get a pain in my rib cage area on whatever side I'm laying on. It hurts and feels like a side ache when you're out of shape trying to run. Sometimes I get shortness of breath and most of it the pain and discomfort is when laying down. What do y'all think???

Hi Steph,

I hope you don't mind a post from a mother that is long past her reproductive years.  When I had my children, u/s was not available.  I had the same kind of "rib pain" that you do and no one could find the cause.  I was 26 weeks pregnant at the time with my first child. At first they thought it was gall bladder problems.

I had a great OB and he measured my belly several times and found that I seemed to be carrying a "long baby."  He said that my baby had gotten comfortable in the womb with one foot and leg, stuck straight out, with it's foot settled underneath my rib.

I suffered for weeks, before my doctor finally said that he was going to try to move the baby into a different position.  That was considered a risky procedure back in the 1970's, not knowing where the placenta was.  He WAS able to maneuver the baby and get his leg positioned so it was tucked under his body, like his other leg.  The relief was instantaneous. I couldn't believe that the baby's foot and leg stretched out in my womb, was causing the problem.  His foot was apparently wedged just between my ribs.

Indeed; when the baby was born, he was almost 23 inches long, which is pretty long baby.  Today my son is 41 years old and is 6'4" tall and boy does he have big feet.  When they put his foot prints on the birth certificate, the length of his foot barely had enough room on the page, with his "piggies" almost going off the page.

I am not saying that this is your problem, but hopefully it is something minor, like mine was. Maybe your baby is tucked under a rib, with an outstretched leg or maybe another body part.  It can happen.

I wish you the best of luck and hope that you feel better soon.  Congratulations on your upcoming delivery.  God Bless both you and your family.

As soon as I get home that bra is off!!! Which dies relieve pressure but then I lat down and it gets worse. Oy!? At least I know I'm not alone! Thanks. I feel better. I'm reclining in my lazy boy and I feel ok now. I may have to say goodbye to my bed if this keeps working.

I get the exact same thing! It sometimes helps if I take off my bra but sometimes it doesn't do anything. My doctor said its just round ligament pain and my baby growing and to drink lots of water. So maybe try that. Good luck :)
