Abbott Voluntarily Recalls Certain Similac® Brand Powder Infant Formulas That Did Not Meet Its Quality Standards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Sept. 22, 2010 - ABBOTT PARK, Ill. - Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand, powder infant formulas in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.

Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:

• Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
• Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

I know wic here in GA is changing formulas next month anyway so I'm probably going to go ahead and try and take these cans back to Kroger and exchange them for one of the kinds they will be using starting next month.  It just makes me uncomfortable.

That's the reason why im debating switching or not...because id have to find time to go into the WIC office and get it all switched. it does say that it was  only in one facility and it was only a remote possibility but it still makes me uncomfortable. The only problem is we've tried a lot of formulas and my son really likes the similac that we use.

Thanks for the info i'll check the site again!

I don't know if they still are but earlier the website was having technical issues and it was saying that ANY lot number you put in was not part of the recall.  I followed the link on the main recall page that gives you a pdf of ALL lot numbers that are part of it just to be safe because we use Similac too.  The can I've been using isn't listed but I'm still scared to use it.  I opened the left over can of Enfamil AR I had from my last kid (exp still good til december) and started using it.  I'm debating on whether or not I trust the similac or if I want to go trade it all for the enfamil, atleast until wic switches over to the Good Start formulas next month!!!

This makes me so glad I don't formula-feed. Remember the other recall or problem with the airplane fuel or something like that? However for those that choose or have to formula-feed I can't imagine how freaked out you are right now! *HUGS* I had to formula-feed my first two so I understand how it is when you worry what is going in their tummies. Thankfully beetles aren't as horrible as engine fuel and shouldn't have caused any problems other than parents wanting to vomit in disgust!

We use the Similac Sensitive when we need to supplement for ours, but it wasn't part of the recall.
