Soda

I tried googling first, but couldn't find the answer i was looking for. How much soda is safe, or what kind should i drink? Diet? Caffeine free? Im almost 12 Weeks, and when i found out i was pregnant at 5 Weeks, i cut out soda completely. i just can't stand the craving anymore! Lol. I heard light soda like 7 up, mountain dew, and sprite don't have caffeine and that i should drink those, but not sure how true that is. i don't want to drink soda everyday, but i need a glass every now and then.

Coke cola is my thing. May be the only bad I do but helps me feel better when I start getting nauseous. Its not the worst thing to do but I try to limit it to two a day!

The most current reccomendations of caffeine is no more than 200 mg, it should not be reccomended to be any more than this...i know there are some that even say 300mg but as far as medical advise goes it is important to go off the latest guidelines

"Update: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists revised its guidelines about drinking coffee and caffeinated beverages in July of 2010. The new guidelines say that up to 200 mg daily of caffeine does not increase the risk of miscarriage or preterm birth. The new guideline was published in the August 2010 issue of “Obstetrics and Gynecology” and is based on a comprehensive review of all published studies on caffeine risks during pregnancy."

also this is in the 2011 mayo clinic guide to a healthy pregnancy book...which is a very credible resource...

One more thing I forgot to put: Here is the way I judge how much I drink; One 16 oz coke has 45 mg of caffeine, so if you had three of those throughout the entire day you'd only be consuming 135 mg and you would still be well under the 250 mg of caffeine a day. But that's just coke I was using as an example. Each soda has diffrent amounts of caffeine, so just check the label. Like someone else said, it's entirely up to you how much you drink though. This is just what my doctor said was fine, so i'm sure every doctor has diffrent views.

I drank 2 cans of Mt. Dew my whole pregnancy and sometimes I would drink a coke also. Just like anything else it's up to you what you want to "risk" putting in your body while pregnant. Sugar and caffeine are the "risks" with soda. It's a judgement choice that only you can make for yourself. It's safe in moderation.

Read the can of soda and you will know how many mg of sugar and caffeine is in each serving.

Caffeine content is at the bottom after the ingredients.

Before I got pregnant, I was a coke-aholic lol! When I found out I was pregnant, I talked to my doctor about drinking soda and he just told me to watch the amount of caffeine I consumed each day and that soda is absolutely fine in moderation. The limit is around 250 mg of caffeine daily, like Ashelen said. I need my caffeine in the morning, so I'll have my coke in the a.m. Throughout the day, I just drink other things like water, juice, pink lemonaide or something. If I do have a coke through the day I usually grab a caffeine free one. Then I'll have a regular in the afternoon when I'm running low on energy. You don't have to just drink clear soda, just watch how much do drink. Count the caffeine and sugar intake and you will be just fine:) Good Luck!

Aspartame (diet sodas) is bad for people with PKU and pregnant women with high levels of phenylalanine in their blood. I looked it up.

The latest reccomendations for caffiene is not to go past 200 mg a day... ya mountain dew has 54 mg in 12oz... which is still far less than a 8oz cup of generic brewed coffee (95-200mg)

I drink diet caffeine free sodas. Most diet sodas use aspartame, which is not bad UNLESS you have a condition where you can't have aspartame (I forgot the name of the condition).

Regular sodas are okay in moderation (they have caffeine and lots of sugar).

Try to drink lots of water and few sodas of any kind.

Mt dew definitely has caffeine in it. When I want a soda I usually drink something like Sprite or A&W rootbeer

Mountain Dew has TONS of caffeine!

Avoid diet drinks - the substitute for sugar that they use is a chemical, and horrible..most doctors will tell you to stay far away.

If you really want soda, the best would be something like ginger ale, or caffeine free versions of regular sodas...but if you want regular soda, you can have up to 250mg of caffeine a day, and the sort of soda you drink doesn't matter so much as how much caffeine each serving has...for instance, a 16-oz coca cola has 45mg of caffeine in it (just checked the bottle I was drinking ;-) ) so you could have quite a few without risking drinking "too much caffeine".

So just moderate how much soda you drink, but regular, non-diet sodas are generally considered OK in small doses :-). It's always best to avoid junk food as much as possible during pregnancy, especially nutrient-deficient and sugar-loaded sodas, but it won't hurt you or baby to have a bit of soda on a daily basis..just be aware of what you're putting in your body and check with your doctor if you're ever in doubt.

Its not so much the soda that isn't safe its the caffeine.  Your allowed, I think it was, 2 cups of coffee a day.  So try to reduce your soda intake as much as you can.
Diet is not good because of the aspartame in it. As for the regular ones you can drink the rule is pretty much anything clear.  Mountian dew is not clear so not one you should go for, it has 55mg of Caffeine per 12oz can, regular coke has 34mg.   Also your other options are the caffeine free stuff if you are craving a certian kind of soda or anything made by Crush, all of their sodas are caffeine free, and most brands of Root Beer are caffeine free too.

A can of pop doesnt have much caffeine, i think the most out of all the basic kinds had 40 mg... but its not the caffiene thats bad, its the amount of sugar your taking in... so having an occasional pop here and there isnt gonna hurt you too much it just doesnt have any benefits from it
