Soft cervix

Just wondering, is the cervix supposed to be soft in the second trimester? My doc said I have a soft cervix but not sure what that means.

Y is your doc checking your cervix right now in your second trimester! There not supposed to be poking around down there either until the third trimester! Have you been bleeding or spotting or something for him/her to  check you! WHat did your doc say about it being soft?

I had bleeding and she diagnosed me as having a low-lying placenta. In fact my placenta is covering my cervix. While checking she mentioned that my cervix is soft but didn't say anything else. Just ordered 2 weeks of bed rest. I didn't think much about the soft cervix then but now I'm starting to wonder what it means...
