Start of induction at hospital

At 6pm I was finally called to go into the hospital. I'm all settled in the room now waiting for the Dr to show up and do a cervical check.

I'm getting cervidal inserted tonight. They will start the pitocin in the morning.

I'm going to try and do a live post of my induction delivery.

We made it home last night together. She is doing great at feeding now. I am pumping every 2.5-3 hours. Not getting much but I am seeing an increase from one pump to the next. My milk has started to come in.

The lady at WIC wouldn't give me formula even though I'm supplementing. She just told me to continue to feed feed feed at breast. Well if I am not making anything it's kinda hard to feed her.

I'm so tired and can't seem to get any sleep I have so much going on.

Congratulations Brittney! Sorry I was'nt able to write sooner things are a little crazy for me too! our babies are only 18 days apart! my Katiana came on the 13th. as far as the weight loss hopefully she will catch up soon, Katiana had lost a 1 pound when I went back to the hosptial for our follow-up when she was 4 days old and we started using a nipple shield too! it took her 2 1/2 weeks to get back up to her birth weight (2 days ago!), but she's doing good now. I hope you were able to bring her home right away, i know how hard it is to leave your baby in the hospital my first one was premature and had to stay in the NICU. Good luck and congratulations!

I really hope she is able to, havign to leave your baby in the hospital is no fun.  I think pumping is an excellent idea.  Even if you end up having to feed her out of a bottle, atleast she will be getting what she needs.  Just remember that as long as YOU feel you have given it your best effort, if breastfeeding doesn't work out there is nothing wrong with formula feeding.  No matter what a lot of people say.  Breastfeeding does NOT come as easily and naturally to some women as most people would like to think it does.

Thanks for all the support.

I'm scheduled for discharge this afternoon and they are talking about moving baby to PEDS.

She is showing some signs of improvment. We got her to drink 12mils of formula from a bottle! We tried the NUK nipple and she seems to be able to handle that. Only way I can get her to latch on my breast is with a nipple shield I had my sister in law go get me. She will latch and suck a few times then just sit there. I can't get her to suck enough to get anything. I think she just gets frusterated I have no milk for her.

I am going to stop by Target on my way home to buy the Medela Pump in Style. They said to try and get her to suck on a pacifier to practice sucking since that seems to be her problem.

They just came in and said if we get one more good feeding of 15mils she will be able to go home with me! Crossing my fingers.

I'm sure you'll have the feeding issues sorted out in no time....at least you're still in the hospital - that's the best place to be, they can help you through this :)

My mom had trouble getting her milk supply in when my youngest brother was born and my grandma (who was a nurse) told her to drink a beer before bed and the next morning she'd be full....sure enough it worked! My mom only had to do this a couple of times but it always worked.

Good luck with everything! And like someone else said you might have to supplement with formula along with milk until your supply kicks in, but don't worry.

Just remember to be persistent, but if it ends up that you have to formual feed it doesn't mean you have failed.  Unfortunately some women just aren't able to.

If you find that when you milk comes in you still aren't producing a lot, ask them to check your thyroid function.  Low thryoid function can cause issues with milk production.  So can diuretics like caffeine.

Aw! I am sorry that she is having such a hard time! I always had a problem with breast feeding with both of my boys and even when I was super engorged after my milk came in I never got more that about an ounce and a half (that includes both sides)... Hopefully like smjmekg said she will get the just of it down; sometimes it just takes the little ones a little longer. She may just need the supplement of the formula until your milk comes in. Keep us updated on how you are doing!

I hope breast feeding works out for you, I know it can be a royal pain in the rear, and super frustrating! Elijah lost more than a pound after he was born, but started to gain after a week and a half.

Kaelynn lost 7% of her weight so we have to figure something out or she will be in the NICU.

I got about 6mil of colostrum pumped and she took it from a syring. But now I just pumped 15 minutes and got nothing. It's pretty frusterating. We tried a different formula and she took 10mils from a syring. It's the first good feeding since she was born.

Feeding issues are something I always have to battle, with each of the 3 kids I've BF we've had supply and latch issues.  Just be persistent, I'm glad they have you pumping.  It will help a lot.  Kaelynn will get it soon.  Poor baby, so many new things to learn all of the sudden.  Poor mama is going through the same thing too.  Update when you can, can't wait to see pictures!!  I bet she's beautiful!!!!

i did a lot of the kangaroo hold (skin to skin) with emilee and she mastered the suck and swallow after...it really didnt take long...hopefully kaelynn doesnt take long...i had to hold emi on her side facing forward to help her...have you tried that?

i just recently started feeding her on her back but she still has problems sometimes...had to switch bottles (im pumping at home because of her long nicu stay) and i found sitting her up works best for feeds (had spit up issues)

im glad all is well and i hope you 2 are able to go home tomorrow :)

It's been a long night and day. Not much sleep. Were having some feeding issues. Kaelynn is having problems coordinating her suck and swallow and gags alot. They started me pumping to get my milk supply in since she can't do it. Were doing a lot of skin to skin holding. I will try and get the laptop out later to upload a picture since I can't do it on my iPhone.

Thanks for all the well wishes.
