Strep B Test...Question?

So I go in on Monday for my docs appointment. And I have to have the strep B test done. I know how it goes, as I have had it before. But I was wondering what they do if it comes back positive? My other one was negative...so I have no idea what to expect if this one comes back positive. If anyone knows, Id appreciate any info. Like if on antibiotics, how do they make you feel, when they put you on them, how long your on them ect....

Thanks in advance.

as most said once comes back positive then you have antibiotics during labour to significantly reduce chances of passing it to your baby, however if you have been positive does not mean it will be positive every time. I was positive 7 years a go but currently testing negative... so you never know until you test close to the time...

Well I guess I will find out tomorrow. UHG I am not looking forward to this at all......I can't believe that I didn't realize the 22nd was my b-day when the receptionist asked if it was an okay date. God what a DUH moment lol.

I will make sure to NEVER schedule something so unpleasant on my b-day ever again. Hubby is making fun of me....I wonder if I can schedule him for a prostate exam on his b-day? lol

It's probably different at every hospital, because I know at my hospital they do an actual IV throughout your whole labor, because I asked my doctor about it.

I was Strep B positive and I was told to walk around. You only need the shot of antibiotics every 4 hours.

That really *****....I guess it is to prevent it from getting on the floor and someone else getting it? I didn't think it was contagious. But hopefully mine comes back negative and I don't have to worry about it. Although I am having such bad luck with this pregnancy I wouldnt doubt it if I had Strep B lol.

Yeah my hospital has awesome whirlpool baths.. Im pretty excited about that, but wont be delivering there unless something unexpected happens.. I think Ill be walking a lot, bouncing alot, in and out of the whirlpool, and be getting LOTS of massages! lol the hand massage that they taught us in lamaze is awesome and I cant wait for travis to have to massage MY back for once. lol

Okay awesome...so we narrowed it down to an IV drip. Yeah I asked my doc why he swabs the forbidden area lol and he said a lot of women already have strep B in their hoo hoo's so it will sometimes always come back positive. He is swabbing IN both areas. I don't mind the swabbing of the vagina...my poor little girl has been poked and prodded since the time of conception lol so im used to it, but the forbidden area...is called that for a reason lol. I had it done with my other pregnancy but im more unnerved this time because I am really hoping to have a very uninvasive delivery. But I don't keep my hopes up with the birth plan, because things can change so suddenly.

I just got mine done on wednesday.
They didn't stick the swab up my butt though?
They stuck it in my vajayjay and ran it OVER my butt- but not IN- ewwwww.
lolol!

But if it doesn come back positive, the lady said they'd give me antibiotics through a drip IV while I'm in labor.

I get a nice warm bathtub....Im hoping to birth in there if I can. Or I also have the birthing ball, and other things...even a birthing swing which is really really nice for the lower back.

But we will see....even with an IV drip I can still birth in the water...I hope lol.

Yeah I agree with you about "the least medically invasive methods" I really don't want to have any medications either, so Im hoping my group b comes back normal, but if not, looks like I will be bouncing on my birthing ball hooked upto that IV drip! lol

I do whatever tests the docs need to do. I just don't want to know any of the answers to the genetic testing, I had a daughter born with a genetic disorder, and the way I look at it is that Im going to love my baby reguardless of what he has or doesnt have. I do the tests for the docs knowledge, but I don't want to know the results.

This third time, mine came back positive.  Even with a c-section, I'm getting the anti-biotics.  Better safe than sorry!  There is a 15% fatality rate in infants who contract the infection.

I think the test result is important, too, IF the baby seems sick, then the pediatrician has more info to go on (what might be the cause), and can treat accordingly.

Thats good. I want the least medical invasive pregnancy possible. Im with holding on the IV unless I need antibiotics or can't go without the epidural. Im also not having the cath done either, can't stand them lol. Anyways I hope mine comes back negative, im sure it will as it did before, but every pregnancy is different.

It's just an IV drip during labor.. the antibiotics wont make you feel any different (this is what my doctor told me) they just go into the baby's system because Strep B is something every women carries, If you have a lot of it they want to treat the baby during labor so that they dont come out with respiratory problems (thats what strep b can do to the baby during a vaginal birth.) From what my doctor and nurse told me its completely normal and there are no side affects to you or baby, the antibiotic just basically makes baby immune to the strep b.

So it's just an antibiotic during labor...that makes it a bit scary for me lol. My babies usually come fast. Im already at 3cm and 100% effaced. Im sure im about 4 or 5cm now because I have been having a lot of contractions these past few days. I think here in the next few days I may end up having Conner. I feel him in my vaginal area, like not in my vagina but I can feel his head near my pubic line, where the hair usually starts down there. I have also had a lot of other symptoms of impending labor, so we will see. I hope I make it long enough for the doc to atleast get the results for the Strep B test. Im soooo mad though, because my b-day is Monday and for my b-day present I get a cotton swab stuck up my rear lol. Yay

I never had it, but I was under the impression that DURING labor you will be on an antibiotic drip?  Maybe I'm wrong though.  :)  GOOD LUCK!
