Thrush??

Dameon just turned a month old yesterday, and I've noticed some small white rings on his lips, and they will NOT come off with wiping, or washing off with a washcloth, I'm just curious if this could be thrush?? I've looked online and it sounds/looks like it could be, but can thrush start on the lips?? Thanks in advance!

I have been sterilizing the bottles/nipples, it's a pain in the butt! I was doing that every time he used a bottle the first week he was born but his ped. told me that I only had to wash them out with soap and hot water, and once a week sterilize them, and look where it got me!

I'm sure the ped. told you but I just want to reinforce how important it is to thoroughly boil any nipples/bottles/pacifiers he's using...throw any away if you have to...thrush is a pAIN IN THE BUT TO GET BRID OF IF YOU DON'T DO EVERYTHING!  SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, TYPING ONE HANDED WIITH BABY IN ONE ARM...

Babies tend to get it a lot....some get it more often than others....really nothing to worry about :)

It turns out it was thrush :[ He's taking oral medicine now, it's definitely helping! thank you ladies :]

From a mom of 4 who has had several bouts with thrush. It does sound like that is what it could be.  Thrush can be on the lips...on the insides of the cheeks, the tongue.  It's hard to tell on the tongue though becuase it's usually always white fromt he fat in the milk.  If you can not wipe it off, most likely it IS thrush.  It doesn't always have to begin with a diaper rash...you can have one or the other.  Both are a type of yeast infection. I would definately take him to the doc or atleast call and see if he will call you in something.  If you are nursing ask for something to treat your nipples as well otherwise you will just pass it back and forth.  They will probably give you a topical liquid for his mouth that you just put on the spots....and a cream for you.  HOWEVER, if this does not take care of the problemin a few days....ask about oral diflucan for both of you.  Sometimes people and the yeast are resistant to the nystatin.  If you ARE nursing and it gets too bad it could be very painful for you.

My son had thrush in his mouth...not around his mouth...it looked like he had milk residue on his tongue...He NEVER got the diaper rash that can be present with oral thrush.  It is VERY difficult to treat since yeast thrives in warm, dark, moist places like a mouth.  Get it checked asap so you can get it treated and under control sooner than later.  Thankfully you are not breast feeding because it can pass back and forth between mom and baby making it painful for mom and even more difficult to treat.

i found white lumps/spots in Liam's mouth when he was a baby and took him to the drs, thinking it was thrush. it wasn't. they were milk spots, harmless. i think with thrush they're most likely to get a nasty, spotty rash down below first...but i'm not certain sorry. the best thing to do is get him to the drs and see what it is in this case.
